SAS opens new route from Stavanger to Houston SAS is starting a new route between Stavanger and Houston from 20 August, in response to strong signals from heavyweight oil industry companies that a direct link between these two oil capitals would be desirable. SAS has performed an in-depth and extensive evaluation and analysis of the market and also held a regular dialogue with the most likely customers. Starting such as special route would need a particular type of aircraft appropriate for the expected volume of traffic and passengers. SAS has therefore signed a wet lease agreement with PrivatAir that will fly the route using a business version of the Boeing 737-700 with 44 seats. The aircraft will be painted in SAS livery. “We are setting up this route as a bespoke product for a defined market with special travel needs,” said SAS President and CEO Rickard Gustafson. “It is a clear indication that SAS listens to what its customers want and that we are prepared to provide targeted products for the important offshore industry,” he added. The service onboard will be in line with the SAS Long Haul Business Class concept with modern inflight entertainment, full service meals and drinks. “We have chosen a wet lease model for these flights to Houston because it fits into our financial parameters and the very specific demands that apply for a type of flight we otherwise would not be able to offer,” said Flemming Jensen, SAS Chief Operating Officer, who added “the flight should increase passenger numbers in the SAS network and create growth and hopefully, more SAS jobs in the longer term”. The timetable for the new route with afternoon departures enables good connections throughout Scandinavia and also to and from Aberdeen, which will also benefit from the new service. From Houston, Star Alliance partner United Airlines offers a number of good onward connections south and west, including to Mexico, Los Angeles, Dallas and Phoenix. The route will start on 20 August, just ahead of Offshore Northern Seas (ONS), the key oil industry exhibition in Stavanger. Tickets for the route, which will fly daily except Saturdays, go on sale from 29 April.
