SATORI, SPREADSHEETS, AND THE HUMAN SPIRIT This post has a pompous title. But I promise, my thesis is simple, short, and lucid. So, what is it? There are more precious VALUES, which our financial-metrics driven business culture often ignore, to our peril. I was trained to be a bean-counter. So, I know a few things about financial metrics. But, I was never happy or satisfied. I yearned for more, and found it. I may write about my path to Satori, some other time. Even in my professional work, I always felt that I was only getting a fraction of the reality. Reading the works of Tom Peters imbued me with hope. I heaved a sigh of relief when I came across his works. Even a PhD in Engineering, from Stanford, felt the gap, and he articulated it superbly. I am re-reading Clayton Christensens article: THE CAPITALISTS DILEMMA in Harvard Business Review (June 2014). Its a must read. Its an expose on how the key metrics we use in evaluating businesses are actually limiting overall economic growth! It also tangentially touched on how inadequate spreadsheets are, I use them often, so I was intrigued. The short-piece on spreadsheets is so lucid, and it shared something that celebrates the resurrection of the human spirit. How, instead of our reverence for elegant, well massaged spreadsheets, with attractive financials, we should focus on: WHERE WE CAN CHANGE LIVES MOST PROFOUNDLY That suggestion suffused me with JOY. Where we can change lives most profoundly. I, cannot think of a more inspiring metric. Michael Oluwagbenga Newman
