SATURDAY, 6/14/14 LAW. Genesis 23. (Page 0027 in the TLASB) “What Does it Cost?” WORSHIP For those of you going to camp with us last week or this week, this is one of our songs. It rocks! https://youtube/watch?v=IU7D369avGI SCRIPTURE: Abraham and Sarah had enjoyed a tremendous life together. Of course, as you may remember, they had experienced more than their share of highs and lows, and had certainly disappointed each other more than once! But life had been a true adventure, and now, at the incredible age of 127, Sarah was gone. Why is Genesis 23 significant? Why are the details of Abraham finding a place to bury her important? Here is my thought: Besides showing the tremendous thought and effort that Abraham went through to find land in which to bury his bride, I have this principle rolling around in my brain: WE VALUE THINGS THAT COST US SOMETHING. Abraham was extremely well-respected, and he was offered land to bury Sarah at no cost. But he would not even consider that. Sarah was VALUABLE to Abraham. He TREASURED her, and in his mind, it MUST cost him something to honor her memory. Do you agree with him? Can you think of something you value that cost you a lot? What about following Jesus? Is there a cost to that? Check out this passage in Luke 9… Luke 9:57-62 The Message (MSG) 57 On the road someone asked if he could go along. “I’ll go with you, wherever,” he said. 58 Jesus was curt: “Are you ready to rough it? We’re not staying in the best inns, you know.” Jesus said to another, “Follow me.” 59 He said, “Certainly, but first excuse me for a couple of days, please. I have to make arrangements for my father’s funeral.” 60 Jesus refused. “First things first. Your business is life, not death. And life is urgent: Announce God’s kingdom!” 61 Then another said, “I’m ready to follow you, Master, but first excuse me while I get things straightened out at home.” 62 Jesus said, “No procrastination. No backward looks. You can’t put God’s kingdom off till tomorrow. Seize the day.” PRAYER Ask God to help you VALUE the right things, and to be willing to pay the cost, whatever it might be. Thank Him for paying the ultimate cost for you. He didn’t pay for you with money, but with His blood!
