On Saturday, October 11th, the Newark Arts Council will host a special poetic tribute to legendary poets Amiri Baraka and Maya Angelou! It will take place at 127 Halsey Street, Newark from 7-11pm. Amiri Baraka and Maya Angelou where two of greatest poets of the United States! In addition to being great friends and comrades, these two giants of literature and social justice are also among the most prolific. They both passed away this year. Baraka, the fiery father of the Black Arts Movement, passed in January, and Angelou, the oral and literary regent of human dignity and hope who also had the distinction of working for both Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, passed in May. “We are not just recognizing two giants, one who were blessed to have right among us making history in this town with Amiri, I would hope that this will be an indication of us committing ourselves to becoming the kind of creative and organizing forces for justice and peace and democracy like they were because that is exactly what we need to be about in this historical moment,” said Jazz poet Zayid Muhammad emphatically. Muhammad, who also a stage actor and writer, is the outgoing national minister of culture for the New Black Panther Party, retiring after serving 15 years on that front. He considers Baraka a mentor and defended Baraka openly on the national stage when Baraka was attacked for his controversial poem ‘Somebody Blew Up America.’ He will perform it with his own original works at the reading!
