SC Appleseed Applauds President Obamas Announcement of Immigration Relief! What does it mean to our Communities? SC Appleseeds breakdown of what the Presidents action means for immigrants. South Carolina Appleseed commends President Obama on behalf of families who benefit from yesterdays announced immigration relief plan. Lost in the talking heads debate about the relief is the fact that families and individuals we all know will be kept intact. They are people we see at the grocery store and whos children play sports alongside our own. This relief will allow families who are already a part of the fabric of our state and our country to be even more involved and invested in a bright and positive future for South Carolina and the United States of America. The Presidents plan as described today includes: Deferred Action for parents of children who are U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents. Expansion of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) to include a greater number of children brought to US by their parents. Replacement of the controversial Secure Communities program with a Priority Enforcement Program. Ensuring that job-creating entrepreneurs have legal means to enter and operate in the U.S. Increasing University affiliated businesses access to key talent. Allowing spouses and children of lawful permanent residents to apply for waivers from within the U.S. Enabling some families of individuals enlisted in the armed forces to attain legal status at the end of their service. Changing the procedures for adjustment of status to allow legal immigrants to jump to the front of the line. Directing agencies to look at modernizing the visa system. Announcement of a new border security campaign and plan. Now we need to roll up our sleeves and continue the harder work of helping all these wonderful families to come out of the shadows and continue being productive contributors to the health and well being of our state and nation. As always I remain your fellow South Carolinian, Sue Berkowitz
