SC verdict on criminals in legislature : Make annexures to NN - TopicsExpress

SC verdict on criminals in legislature : Make annexures to NN Vohra report public Supreme Court verdict on termination of membership from legislature immediately on being convicted is a welcome step, but much short because of it not being enforcement on those who already filed appeal against conviction. Thereby the important verdict will not be applicable on a vast majority of our Parliamentarians and legislators. Political community has a readymade argument that it is the voters who elect criminals. But voters have no option other than choosing one of the several bad elements put before them by different political parties. Need is to provide voters a genuine and easy opportunity to reject all such bad elements. It is time that Supreme Court sue motto takes up issue of giving voters right of secrecy in voting if they wish to exercise their right already available under rule 49(o) for ‘None-to-Vote’. Under present system voter’s identity is disclosed because he/she has to sign the voters’ register in case of exercising his/her right for ‘Non-to-Vote’. Secrecy can be ensured only by implementing Election Commission’s recommendation for putting option of ‘Non-to-Vote’ on Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). It is also most timely that annexures of NN Vohra Committee on political-criminal nexus may be made public also as directed by Central Information Commission (CIC). Surprisingly officials representing Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) at CIC are not aware of any such annexures.
