SCAM ALERT California, MO (September 03, 2014) - Possible Utility Scam The City of California received information today that there may again be individual(s) targeting City of California utility customers. We received one report where the caller identified himself as an employee with a utility company and told the customer that their electric account had not been paid. The customer did not provide any information over the phone and called the City to report the possible scam. The City of California utility bills are due the 10th of the month. If payment is not received by the 20th of the month customers are notified by a city employee in person that their services are being shut off. City of California staff members will not solicit payments over the phone. If customers have a question about a bill they should contact the Utilities department at City Hall 573-796-2500 Here are some safety tips: Never send cash or money orders or give out personal information such as credit card numbers and expiration dates, bank account numbers, dates of birth, or social security numbers to unfamiliar companies or unknown persons. If you call the number back that called you to verify the information and a recording picks up not stating the name of the company this is a scam. Make a phone call to verify the information. A thirty second phone call can save you money. Before you send money, ask yourself a simple question. What guarantee do I have that this solicitor will use my money in the manner we agreed upon? Be skeptical - Always take your time making a decision. Legitimate companies wont pressure you to make a snap decision .If someone comes to your home claiming to be with a utility company, ask for identification. Do not let the person in your home. If something doesnt seem right its not right. If you have information about a fraud, report it to a law enforcement agency. Please Share this information with friends and relatives. Staying informed is the best way to prevent being scammed.
