Every year we receive reports from citizens who are harassed, scammed, or otherwise annoyed by calls and text messages from people claiming to be friends or family members who have changed their phone number. If you don’t recognize the number of the person you are communicating with, and you aren’t 100% certain that they are who they say they are, take a few precautions: Do not give ANY personal information Do not send pictures of any kind Do not give out another friend’s number or information Do not say anything that you wouldn’t say to a stranger Try to verify that you are actually talking to who they claim to be. Send them an email, contact a mutual friend and see if they know about the number change, or simply call their old number (they one they supposedly changed) and see if they answer. A few extra precautions can potentially save you a lot of headache!
