SCHOOL EYE HEALTH PROGRAMME LAUNCHED IN EDUCATION DISTRICT VI. Lagos State Government has flagged off the School Eye Health Programme in Education District VI to ensure all round educational development of children in all primary schools. The Tutor-General/Permanent Secretary, Education District V1, Mrs Iyabo Osifeso, emphasized the significance of the eye to human existence and urged teachers and parents to pay attention to the eyes of their pupils and children and reports any defect to the eye clinic. She said, I will advise teachers and parents observe their pupils and children to ensure that their eyes are good as early detection of eye defect can be dealt with by eye specialists. The Education Secretary, Ikeja Local Government Education Authority, Mrs Bolanle Shittu reiterated the importance of school eye health programme to primary education in the State. According to her, the introduction of the Lagos State School Eye Health Programme is one of the ways of ensuring that sights of children are taken care of in ensuring that they have brighter future.. Dr. Funmilayo Sokunbi, who represented the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris, appreciated the pupils and parents in Education District VI. She said teachers have been trained in all the education local government education authorities (LGEAs) to conduct eye screening on pupils and refer those with defects for free eye treatment at government hospitals. According to her, ‘’eye specialists will go round all the schools to treat pupils that have been identified with eye disorder and visual impairment during screening. The representative of the commissioner disclosed that, Vision corridors have been installed in selected schools in all LGEAs and the teachers have been trained on how to make effective use of the vision corridors to detect those pupils with poor sight. The high point of the ceremony was the unveiling of the vision corridors screening site by the Tutor-General/Permanent Secretary,Education District VI, Mrs. Iyabo Osifeso. Other dignitaries at the occasion were the Oba of Onigbongbo, HRM Olatunji Yusuff and Bale of Omole, Alhaji Nasiru Bakare.
