Two other former members of the regiment arrived but a family emergency cropped up and they had to beat a hasty retreat. Hopefully we will see them in the future. These are the direct result of Graeme Black’s sterling effort to recruit younger members into the branch via the Internet and other modernistic stuff. All the programmes for the gathering were distributed and the payments taken. Our raffle from donated prizes realized a whopping £39, which almost made the treasurer cry with glee! . Death of Former Branch Member Sadly 24000481 Alf Adams from Sunderland, passed away on 3rd August after a long illness, bravely borne. Alf and his brother Wilf both served in the 1st Battalion in Malaya and Edinburgh, and both in the cookhouse. His funeral took place at Sunderland Crematorium on Monday 12th August and was attended by several members of the branch. Floral tributes were also provided. I am informed that after his release, Alf found it hard to settle, but eventually joined Beal’s Metal Fabrications on Tyneside, where he worked for over thirty years, and many noteable metal structures on Tyneside were Alf’s work. He leaves a wife, Wendy, three children and nine grandchildren and will be sadly missed .Association Deaths 2705054David GrantCentral Branch living in Grangemouth 2697487Robert (Bob) King OBEFife Branch Jim Martin Borders Branch John Croucher residing in Rainham, Kent. Branch Annual Dinner on 19th October 2013 at Bishop Auckland Golf Club It has been confirmed as Colonel (Rtd) Johnny Clavering, well known to former signal platoon members, will be our honoured guest It would be nice to enjoy a good turnout for this prime speaker Also, HRH The Colonel, the Duke of Kent, would also like to dine with all the branches of the Association, but for this to happen branches need to submit requests well in advance as his diary is always chocker-block. The price for this year’s dinner is just £20pp and cheques should be addressed to Durham & Yorkshire Branch, Scots Guards Association. All monies should reach the Treasurer by 5th October so that sufficient food can be bought and prepared. Anyone requiring a vegetarian meal should make it known when paying. Menu Vegetable Soup and Bun Roast Beef with Yorkshire Pudding Seasonal Vegetables and Potatoes Gravy Black Forest Gateaux with Cream Coffee or Tea with Shortbread Biscuits and Mints Whisky will be available for toasts and of course we will have the now traditional disco for the more energetic of us. Once again, Alex Low will pipe in the top table and later play a selection of Scottish Music. A raffle prize would be appreciated .Diary Dates The 2014 Annual General Meeting of the Association will be held on Saturday 26th April in Wellington Barracks, with the Regimental Remembrance Sunday on the following day, Sunday 27th . Calling afternoon TV buffs One of our senior members, Stan Young, from Newcastle may be a contestant on the Deal or No Deal afternoon TV programme, hoping to win a fortune. Knowing his luck, he probably will, so make a point of staying in from 4pm -5pm weekdays after September 19th. Stan is a big asset to the branch, making generous donations and obtaining contacts for tee shirts and caps. Page filler I took my wife to the pawnbroker’s shop, by the sign of the three brass balls. The pawnbroker said “I’m astounded, Sir. What you ask would break the rules!” “You can’t just pawn your wife, Sir. It’s unethical, so be warned, For they say, ”Hell hath no fury, like a woman pawned.” “Even if you could” he went on, though ridiculous, it seemed “What would I do if you left her here, unwanted, unredeemed?” “She would be in my shop-window, people would travel from afar. Pretty soon she’d become famous, in fact she’d be a pawn star!” “So don’t try to pawn your wife ,Sir. Its complicated and to no avail” “Just take her out one Sunday morn and sell her in a car boot sale!” Sunday Luncheon Club Four couples dined at the George and Dragon in Heighington on Sunday 3rd August. What a lovely meal! The pork was nearly an inch thick with tasty crackling, and there were no clean plates due to the lavish amounts served. Can’t wait to go back there! Our raffle made £12. The venue for Sunday September 1st is the Oak Tree Inn near to Durham and Tees-side Airport. Annual Subscriptions The Treasurer informs me that despite all that has been put into the newsletters recently there are some who enjoy the monthly newsletter but do not seem to wish to pay. In some cases members have attempted to set up Standing Orders without success. I apologise for this, but until recently the branch had a Halifax Club Account which Halifax have ceased doing so everything was transferred to a Barclay account, but the new account number was not published. It is 0013915107 Sort Code 20-25-29. Paying by this method makes things much simpler for everyone. When setting it up either ask for a reference number or name, so it can be identified by the Treasurer, and obviously inform him of this reference On a Happier Note Former member of the regiment, 2693763 L/Sgt Murray Hutton celebrated his 100th birthday, also on the 12th August. Born in Alvah in Aberdeenshire, Murray joined the regiment in December 1929, and joined the 1st Battalion after completing training at both Pirbright and Caterham. He left the regiment in 1934 but was recalled for the 2nd World War,joining the 1st Battalion and going to Germany two days after D DayM. Myself and Pamela had the honour of visiting him at his home in Yarm where he lives alone. His only problem is his hearing and was driving until two years ago. We delivered a birthday card from the branch and the Branch Chairman loaned a bottle of Scots Guards whiskey, which, I’m told, is still on sale in the Battalion. Hopefully Murray will join us at the Gathering and he is still interested in the regiment and readily accepted my invitation to become a life member of the branch. Perhaps the powers that be will consider him meeting the Colonel at Catterick! Murray Hutton reading his card. 100 years old and no spectacles! REGIMENTAL GATHERING – This will take place over the weekend 7th – 8th September 2013 commencing with the Regimental Band marching through Darlington town centre at 12 noon on Saturday 7th September and giving a a 20 minute recital. Come along, have a great day meeting old friends and see ho the serving part of the Regiment now operates. If you haven’t yet obtained your entry tickets but still wish to attend you can pay at the gate.. Please have the correct money ready. Being on the barrack’s square, it is wheelchair friendly, so don’t let this be a reason for missing out. I’m told the next gathering may not be held until 2016, due various regimental issues. Next Meeting:- CIU Club, Sheraton Rd, Newton Aycliffe, Co Durham at 7-15pm for 7-45 start on Wednesday 11th September 2013.
