SECOND GENERATION COMPUPER The main difference between the computers and of the first and second generation is that, in the second transistor were used instead of the vacuum tubes. Transistor is the short term for Transfer Resistor and it was discoverd by John Burdeen, Walter H. Brattain and William B. Shockley, the Nobel Prize winners. It was the invention of transistor in 1948 that led to the devolopment of the second generation computers. Though they were expensive mechines which only large commercial organizations could afford they were a step further in the advancement of the modern computer. The transistor had the following advanteges comperd to the valves: * Far superior in performance *Smaller power consumption *Less heat production rate *Faster, smaller and more power full In fact, these computers were far better than their ancestors. If the computers of the first generation could perform 500 tasks per second, the second generation computers could perform around five lakh tasks. Some of them are given below: IBM 1620 IBM 1401 IBM 7094 CDC 1604 CDC 3600 RCA 501 Jack Kilby
