SEE THE PHOTOS, THEN READ THE STORY. (Above, click PHOTOS/ALBUMS, then click the album.) An elderly couple goes in every other day to feed these cats. They love the cats, but the woman is barely able to take a few steps without stopping, out of breath. The smell is horrible. A rescue volunteer told the woman we are going to take good care of the cats and the woman seemed relieved. Recently, Animal Control gave the couple a deadline to get the cats and kittens out. If seized, the cats will go to the Devore animal shelter where they will be subjected to a traumatic experience and disease. Afraid, needing to be assessed and worked with, these cats will not be eligible for adoption. They will wait for their kill day to arrive, alone in cages, in a noisy, scary environment. Responding to a call, Cat Angel Network agreed to help. The above volunteer approached other rescues, but was turned away. Nearly all-volunteer-run, rescues are perpetually overfull, understaffed and underfunded. CAN spoke with Animal Control and was able able to buy us some time. We are are all volunteers and we need to move fast. Once we have the cats, we need to get them to the vet. The cats are shy. Not all are shown in the photos. They are not accustomed to being handled, so we are going to have to trap and foster for assessment. From there, we will determine if they can be adopted. Stray Cat Alliance is loaning us some traps and cages. We may need to buy additional cages for holding and assessment. Volunteers will need body gear such as masks to protect volunteers from bacteria, mold and odor. Our biggest expense will be vet care. If we have no surprises and no additional cats, expenses (mostly for vet care) could cost $3,000 - $4,000. CAN is a nonprofit that recently got their 501(c)(3) status from the IRS. They do not have their web site and FB pages set up to take donations, yet. DONATIONS can be sent via PayPal to: info@CatAngelNetwork. IMPORTANT: Please note with any donation, Highland cats. This particular rescue is in Marin County and their site is CatAngelNetwork. The .org site is for a different rescue.
