SEMINAR FROM THE NATIONAL WOMENS CONFERENCE 2014 Topic: Challenges of widowhood. Text: Ruth 1:1-5, Judges 2:16, 2 kings 8:1, Genesis 35:19, Luke 2:36, 1 kings 17:10-24. Speaker: Sis. Rita Udeh Who Is A Widow? She is a legally married woman, to a man who later died leaving her behind (Ruth 1:3-10). In the Old Testament, in the law of Moses special regard was given to widows, they are left to depend partly on the affections of relations, more especially of the eldest son, whose birthright imposed such a duty on him and partly on the privileges accorded to other distressed classes, such as participation in the triennial third tithe (Deu. 14:29, 26:12). In leasing Deu. 24:19-20, God Himself claimed a special interest in the widows, even calling Himself their husband (Ps. 68:5, 146:9). God is not happy with anyone that oppresses a widow (Ps. 94:6, Eze. 27:7, Mat. 3:5). In the New Testament church, widows were sustained at public expense, the relief being daily administered (Acts 6:1-6, Jam. 1:27). Specific directions were given by Apostle Paul as to the classes of widows to be supported by the church. The Christian widows could remarry only in the Lord (1 Cor. 7:39), others were to be married to the work of God. Her Challenges 1. Her position has changed from being a wife of a man to a wife of God, and God said I am the husband of the widow 2. Most times her challenges are from her in-laws, sometimes she is accused of being responsible for the death her husband by her in-laws. Sometimes, her rights are being denied by her said in-laws, properties of her husband being taken from her. Some of the in-laws would want to marry her, etc. 3. Financial challenges. Sometimes she bears the burden alone, nobody cares especially from the in-laws. 4. Challenges of bringing up children. 5. Emotional challenges, she is always alone. 6. Spiritual challenges. She has no husband to act as a spiritual covering to her. 7. She has no freedom of association. Conclusively, God whop is her husband is always there for her. Jesus said, fear not only believe! Remember that God who is your husband now is a jealous God, be faithful to Him.
