SENATE DEBATE ON CONSTITUTION AMENDMENT: Was it truly about Citizenship Renunciation as is being argued or a silent endorsement of Underage Marriage? Should the issue be revisited before the constitutional amendments are adopted? Sections 25-32 of the 1999 Constitution deals with issues of citizenship and Section 29 in particular deals with renunciation of citizenship; 29. (1) Any citizen of Nigeria of full age who wishes to renounce his Nigerian citizenship shall make a declaration in the prescribed manner for the renunciation….(there are some omissions)… (4) For the purposes of subsection (1) of this section. (a)"full age" means the age of eighteen years and above; (b) any woman who is married shall be deemed to be of full age. The Senate earlier voted and removed Section 29 (4b) but Senator Ahmed Sani Yerima rejected the removal saying that the deletion amounted to a contravention of Sharia Law and requested a re-vote which did not meet the 2/3 majority requirement.
