SENATOR JAN McLUCAS ACTING SHADOW MINISTER FOR HEALTH SHADOW MINISTER FOR MENTAL HEALTH SHADOW MINISTER FOR HOUSING AND HOMELESSNESS SENATOR FOR QUEENSLAND MEDIA RELEASE GP TAX A DISASTER FOR PUBLIC HOSPITALS COALITION CONFIRMS The GP Tax will smash public hospitals, driving hundreds of thousands of patients into already overcrowded emergency departments, Tony Abbott’s coalition colleagues in NSW have today revealed. Scenarios prepared for the NSW Government in May, show an extra 500,000 people a year would choke NSW emergency departments if the GP Tax is introduced. The Baird Government estimates this would cost the state an additional $80 million on top of its existing hospital cuts, a scenario certain to be repeated in every state and territory. And this is likely to be an underestimate, as the NSW estimate was based on a GP Tax of just $6, not the $7 proposed by the Abbott Government. Acting Shadow Minister for Health Jan McLucas said the NSW analysis backs up what Labor and the health experts and professionals have been saying for months now – the GP Tax will be a disaster for public hospitals. “The GP Tax is bad for patients, bad for doctors, bad for the health system and bad for the Budget,” Senator McLucas said. “It’s time Tony Abbott and Peter Dutton listened to what all the experts, Labor and now even their coalition colleagues are telling them and dump this tax for good. “The evidence is now in – the GP Tax is a disaster for health and must be abandoned.” WEDNESDAY, 8 OCTOBER 2014 MEDIA CONTACT: STEPHEN SPENCER 0423 596 573
