Featuring on the night are comedian & poet Alice Fraser, fresh from a funny TED Talk about death entitled What are We Doing?. Writer Bindi Donnelly from JUNKEE is gracing the mic, most likely with something disgracefully funny. Comedian & comedy producer Nikko Malyon will doubtlessly deliver hilariously weird images into your brain. Youll be warmed and enthralled by words from bubbly wordsmith Daniel Silver, as well as multi-lingual slam champ and Australian-Burning-Man-About-Town, Onur Ka. We also have a secret weapon of a hip-hop guest lined up that Ill keep secret to prevent premature mind-explosions. Loose Leaf has always opened space for performing writers to jump up on stage spontaneously: if you have a song, a story, a poem or some standup you want to perform, jump on the event and sign yourself up or email me at dacarter@gmail. Slots are 5 mins max, and if you need anything more complicated than a mic or guitar let me know your requirements in advance! You can also sign up for a limited number of spontaneous slots reserved on the night. Entry to Loose Leaf is free, but in a larger space with more professional gear well have higher overheads this show, so donations on departure are much appreciated so we can keep nurturing the Loose Leaf mission to shine a light on Sydneys subterranean writers & performers. Heres some great feedback from the amazing Peter Jones: I feel compelled to write to you, even though the result of my writing will possibly curtail some of the very enjoyment of which I am about to write. Last night I turned up at the Olympic Hotel (308 Moore Park Rd, Paddington) to play a few songs at the advertised open mic night hosted by a bloke called Phil Grey, who I’d never met nor heard of previously. Upon my arrival I was greeted by the aforementioned Phil, and made feel well at home in what is a nice clean and well attended bar - just ignore the ubiquitous TV screens and the bar and food is good, I parked right across the road and the P.A. is among the better ones you’ll find at this type of night (Phil said he’s recently upgraded his gear). I looked forward to playing a few of my songs and listening to other performers, but to my surprise there was only one other performer present aside from our host. All the better, thought I to myself (perhaps a little selfishly), more time for me. I do have a long song list after all. As it turned out, one other performer did turn up, so along with the enjoyment of playing some of my stuff I got to listen to two really good performances, and play a little harmonica into the bargain. It was a good fun night and Phil turned out to be the very gentleman he seemed to be when we first introduced ourselves at the beginning of the evening. So, here’s my problem; I’d really like to encourage other performers to get down to the Olympic Hotel on a Wednesday night because it seems to be one of those “best kept secret” places, but that would mean that next time I go I might not get to play such a lovely extended set because there’ll be more performers on the list! Oh, what the heck - if you are looking for a place to play on a Wednesday night please do consider the Olympic Hotel. It’s not as out-of-the-way as it may seem and I think it has the makings of a good gig if enough people get down there. All good, Peter Jones Dont forget its happening every Wednesday night and if anybody wants to get up and play, either let me know or just turn up on the night with your instrument of choice. Western Suburbs Gig this Friday! This Fri 19 Sept, 7:30-10:30pm: Rosehill Hotel, 91 Parramatta Rd, Granville come along and play - Stuart Jammin is hosting - keep live music alive in the Western half of Sydney! originals and covers welcome! Many talented musicians and a comfortable friendly venue. Petersham Inn The next Petersham gig Inn will be on Saturday 13th December. Then we will go to twice a month starting Sat 10th January. Newington Inn sold And as I reported last week, the Newington Inn has been sold and the new owners have cancelled all our gigs there. Apologies to anyone who turned up without booking, I did try to contact all likely performers via Facebook and email As I have said before, it is REALLY important you book through me, so I can let you know when things like this happen! APRA LIVE PERFORMANCE RETURNS - MONEY FOR YOU! On Tuesday 19th August, I sent out the list of everybodys gigs (according to my records) from 1 July 2013-30 June 2014 so you can prepare your APRA Live Performance Returns. If you did not receive an email with your details, please let me know! Note: I make no guarantee that what I send you will be 100% correct, so you will need to check it against your own records (get back to me if you find any discrepancies). I included instructions on how to enter the information - one person has already told me it looks complicated - but it will all make sense once you open the APRA web site apra-amcos.au, and it is worth the effort because you will get PAID for performing your songs (that person will make over$200). You just need to: 1. Join APRA now at apra-amcos.au, if you are not already a member (it’s FREE), and register your songs 2. Log on to apra-amcos.au and enter the performances I send you (plus any others you have done) 3. Enter how many times you have performed each song over the year. They will send you a cheque in November! If you have any problem entering these details contact Writer Services: [email protected] or phone them on the local number for your state listed on their web site. I don’t work for APRA so DO NOT CONTACT ME about how their web site works. TIP (THOUGHTS) OF THE WEEK Thoughts for the Day: Dont practise until you get it RIGHT. Practice until you can’t get it WRONG From https://facebook/coverbandcentral via https://facebook/nbyouthbands “When the power of love overcomes the love of power the world will know peace.” ― Jimi Hendrix The second of these thoughts were borrowed from my brother, Terrys Facebook page https://facebook/pages/Blue-Taboo/641797352530240 - listen to Blue Taboos wonderful music! (thats MY tip) They were recently #1 in the Reverbnation Jazz charts for Sydney - reverbnation/bluetaboo This might be of interest: chn.ge/1skFGa8 a petition to Commit to an Australian Music Museum - its a great idea, though personally Id prefer money to go to supporting young and unknown musicians. Maybe thats where the profits from such a museum should go! Please feel free to send in your tips, practical ones or motivational ones, funny ones, whatever you think will finish the newsletter on a good note!!
