SERENGETI AIRPORT MOVES FORWARD Tanzania: Ministry Issues Permit for Mugumu Airport Construction AFTER complaining for several years, residents of Serengeti District in Mara Region are now happy that the government has endorsed construction of Mugumu airport. The people expect that construction of the much waited airport will play a significant role to change their lives. The airport is designed to transform Mugumu town, the capital of Tanzania wildliferich district of Serengeti into a tourist hub. It is expected to see significant increase of tourists landing in Mugumu before travelling by vehicles into the world famous Serengeti National Park (SENAPA). The location of the envisaged airport is about 40 km away from SENAPA, hence officials say it does not have any threat on the sustainable conservation of the park, which is blessed with a variety of beautiful fauna and flora. Instead, the improvement of the travel infrastructure is seen as imperative for responsible development of high yield- low impact tourism in western Serengeti, according to the official. The Mugumu airport is further expected to relieve wild animals of disturbance caused by flights landing and taking off at Seronera airport located in the heart of the world famous park according to conservationists based in Western Serengeti. ~ ALL AFRICA OP ED You can read our response on our website here: savetheserengeti.org/stop-the-serengeti-international-airport/ Read entire Allafrica. com article here: allafrica/stories/201411210169.html
