SERIOUS GOVERNANCE CONCERNS ABOUT THE NVRHS BOARD OF EDUCATION - IT’S NOT JUST RDT ANYMORE. In the last week there have been some very troubling developments regarding the NVRHS BOE, which extend well beyond the current RDT controversy. In a nutshell - the Board has reworded motions after the fact and altered rules midway to suit individual Board members interests. This should give the community great cause for concern. At the last Board meeting on October 14, President John Schettino acknowledged that he had sought to have the extended policy committee vote to approve a draft policy (which they had worked on for only 10 days) and that he had intended to present the draft to the Board that night. Mr. Schettino’s statement demonstrates his disregard for the motion by board member John Paasalaqua, passed on September 23, to “table review of any RDT policy, not to be considered by the full board until after its reorganization in January.” When board attorney Yaacov Brisman sought to reframe the motion to prevent only a board vote, Mr. Passalaqua clearly corrected him, stating that the motion was to not even read the policy to the full board before January. Despite efforts by Mr. Schettino and Mr. Brisman to limit the motion to voting, immediately prior to the vote, both confirmed that the motion prevented a policy from being presented to the board before January. Members of the public were concerned by Mr. Schettino’s attempt to reword this motion language at the October 14 board meeting. This concern has been elevated, due to the statement by the Board office, as reported in this weekend’s Northern Valley Press that “the motion carried at the September 23 meeting prevents the board from voting on the policy until January. It says nothing about the board seeing a draft of the policy before January.” Due to the current level of distrust of the Board, meetings are now being videotaped by members of the public, in addition to the audio recordings available from the Board offices. The actual motion language can be easily verified, despite Mr. Schettino’s protestations otherwise. The video clip is available BELOW so anyone can see it for themselves. The rewording of motions after the fact and the alteration of rules midway to suit individual Board members interests should give the community great cause for concern. This concern now extends to all issues addressed by the board, not solely RDT. If we cannot even trust the board to accurately act on the language of their OWN motions or follow their OWN rules, how can we trust them to responsibly manage and disburse $50 million of taxpayer money?
