SERMON FOLLOW-UP FROM JOSH: There are few things so dangerous as pride. As the Lord says in Obadiah, pride deceives us. In our arrogance were convinced that were secure when were not. In the garden, Satan deceived Eve to believe that Gods command could be ignored and that she would be safe despite Gods promised judgment on disobedience. You will not surely die, Satan said, and Eve, puffed up with pride, believed the lie. In Obadiah, it is Edom that is puffed up with pride, trusting in his rocky fortresses, powerful allies and famed wise men, that is deceived into believing that it can stand at odds with God and take advantage of his people with impunity. The fallen human heart is by nature proud and deceived, convinced that it is safe from God despite its sin. But God tells Edom -- and all the nations -- that the proud will be brought down. Their ruin will be utter and complete. Gods judgment is thorough, exact, perfect. The Lord says, As you have done, it shall be done to you; your deeds shall return on your own head. Those who arrogantly drink in celebration today will drink the cup of Gods wrath to its dregs on the day of the Lord. All Gods enemies must drink from this cup and given that we are all born in sin and have all have sinned and fallen short of Gods glory -- this is both horrifying and terrifying. But there is another way, a way in which the strict justice of God can be satisfied and we dont have to drink the cup of his wrath. His Son drank it for us. It is this cup which Jesus prayed to have removed from him in the garden of Gethsemane. Christ drank of that cup on the cross. If we humble ourselves and trust in him, rather than foolishly, proudly clinging to our own efforts, then when the day of the Lord comes we shall be like those in Mt Zion who escape. The cup of wrath will pass from us and we will be exalted when the kingdom is the Lords.
