SET APART BY, NOT FROM In the movie The First Wives Club, Goldie Hawn played a character who had done so many face lifts, silicone injections, and lip enlargements that she wasnt able to hold a cigarette in her mouth long enough to light it. The character was funny because she was so over the top. From what I saw last week, Goldies character wouldnt seem so bizarre. A woman still in her 20s had ten procedures done to her face and body in one day - and she says shes not through yet! Shes so obsessed with her own looks, she doesnt want to be around people she considers ugly. At least Goldies character waited until she hit the big 4-0! If were not careful, we can fall into a trap of having the same attitude in our spiritual life. We should always strive to grow in righteousness and holy living, but not to the point where we dont want to associate with people outside of Christ. Thats when weve lost sight of our purpose in life - we are not set apart from people, but set apart by God to proclaim His Gospel. The Apostle Paul has a good description of this attitude when he says... For I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh (Romans 9:3).
