SETBACKS are tricky business. How do you know youve had a SETBACK - TopicsExpress

SETBACKS are tricky business. How do you know youve had a SETBACK and forgive yourself and move on versus you honestly just arent feeling that motivated? Its tough because there is a difference, and it can be subtle. And when we are trying hard to learn and incorporate new habits, it can be a slippery slope. Remember this: You can only have a SETBACK if you have had some forward progress and momentum. Have you been moving 3x per week or more for many months, but somehow now are struggling to make time for regular exercise? That is probably a SETBACK. Take a look at your life and what may have changed. Or listen to your body...are you more tired or sore than typical. Those are indicators to point you in the direction of what to address. Have you been consistently eating most of your meals at home for many months and now you find yourself out for lunch more days than not? That, too, is probably a SETBACK. Review your habits. What did you used to do for lunch prep that you arent doing now? Have you eaten the same lunch more times than you can count? Perhaps you are bored and need some new fuel ideas. On the other hand, do you find yourself exercising only sporadically--sometimes one day a week, sometimes three, then maybe not at all for 10 days. Since you havent developed a new routine that youve followed for quite some time, this probably isnt a SETBACK. This is more likely the challenge of getting started and building habits that is a stumbling block. In this case, start small and build! Commit to your one day per week until it is your routine, then add on from there. Start small in changing your habits and be honest with yourself. Yes, forgiving yourself for not making the best choices is important. But also be careful not to excuse your choices either! The business of changing your habits takes time. Be prepared to dig in and fight your way through some challenges at first. Thats the way to build confidence in yourself so when the true SETBACK happens you will know you are capable of getting back on track!
