SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT. Re the article on page 2 of todays IW County Press (14/11/14) that clearly implied that fellow arts organisation and long term partner of ours, Quay Arts, lost core funding as a result of our success. The CP says .... the venue (Quay Arts) had lost out on funds from Arts Council England. Instead, £230,000 was given to Ryde-based NCC.. In response to the article we have just received this statement from Arts Council England, setting the record straight. Phil Gibby, Area Director, South West, Arts Council England said: ‘Culture throughout the South West is vibrant and exciting with organisations and artists doing exceptional work and engaging their whole community in inspirational and enjoyable activities. Unfortunately, the level of ambition demonstrated in funding applications is not matched by our financial resources so we have to make extremely difficult choices. ‘The decisions to invite 82 organisations in the South West – including the New Carnival Company - into the National Portfolio for 2015/18 were each taken on their own merits and have no bearing on the decision not to select Quay Arts. There is no correlation between the decisions, which were considered separately based on the strength of the 122 individual applications and their overall strategic approach to delivering our core mission, great arts for everyone, whilst achieving a balance through the south west. ‘But funding for National portfolio organisations is only one part of Arts Council England’s investment programme and hopefully we may be able to support some of the unsuccessful organisations in other ways, such as through our Grants for the arts programme.’
