‘SEVENTY THOUSAND STUDENTS HAVE ALREADY BENEFITED FROM IGNOU’ Regional Director of IGNOU in Srinagar Dr Nurul Hassan says over 1.3 lakh learners have benefited from IGNOU centers in the past 12 years in Kashmir and 20, 000 students are currently pursuing various courses from the Srinagar regional centre INTERVIEW Tell us something about yourself? I come from a modest family. As a result I learned efficiency, how to take initiatives, and I could develop very compelling arguments with my older siblings. These skills served me well in my early career. After completing High School from a small town of Barabanki in Uttar Pradesh, I moved to Aligarh Muslim University for further studies and obtained Doctorate Degree in Geology with specialization in Hydro-geology in 1994. I have an experience of about 20 years including five years of research experience in Assessment, Management, Development, Evaluation, Quality Assessment of Groundwater in the Gangetic plains of Uttar Pradesh. I have also done research on environmental issues. And before joining IGNOU I worked as Hydro-geologist in UP Remote Sensing Applications Centre, Lucknowand Ground Water Expert in UP Irrigation Department. Tell us about your work as a Regional Director of IGNOU, Srinagar? About IGNOU, I find the work extremely challenging and accomplishes my duties with great responsibility. I feel that working as aRegional Director gives me the responsibility to help masses who are disadvantaged and live in the rural areas. I work towards minimizing the drop-out rate and encourage the learners in the region to continue their education. Thus I feel that IGNOU gives opportunity to the learners to work and learn at the same time. The Regional Centre has produced several Gold medalists along with several Masters’ degree and Doctoral degrees from the region. How has the IGNOU Regional Centre in Srinagar benefited students and what are the courses and degrees it offers? IGNOU Regional Centre Srinagar was established in February 1999 with a view to provide the higher educationto the masses of Kashmir Division including Leh and Kargil. Regional Centre started its functioning from the campus of Kashmir University with jurisdiction over the valley of Kashmir and the districts of Leh, Kargil and Tangdhar with just four Study Centers, 14 programs and around a thousand learners. In just 12 years of its existence, Regional Centre Srinagar has enrolled over 1.3 lakh learners and emerged as one of the largest centres among the Regional Centres across the country. During this period Regional Centre Srinagar reached to the masses and was able to impart higher education through ODL mode at the doorsteps of the needy people to inculcate competency in them and development skills in today’s competitive world. Presently RC Srinagar is offering approximately 250 programs, ranging from Certificates, Diplomas, Advance diplomas, PG diplomas, Bachelors and Masters in various disciplines. The professional Programs offered include MBA. MCA, MTM, B.Ed. M.Ed, BCA, PG diploma in Hospital Health Management, Geriatric Medicine, Food Science, Information Security, Bachelor and diploma programs in Nursing etc. We have witnessed the higher enrolments in the programs like Masters in Sociology, Political Science, Public Administration, Psychology, Management, English, History and technical programs like MCA and BCA. We are in the process of starting need based programs for the benefit of peoples of Kashmir valley. How many students have received education from this regional centre so far? Approximately 70 thousand have been benefited and received education from this regional entre. The graduates from this regional centre are working in Government and Private sector, both in and outside the country. What has been the trend of admissions? Is it increasing? The trend of admission have been increased many fold since the inception of regional centre. Presently about 20 thousand students are enrolled. There has beenan increase of 15 percent in enrollments compared to previous session. What about opening a placement cellfor the benefit of IGNOU graduates? The idea of opening a placement cell is good and it will help IGNOU students to a great extent. Presently we have central placement cell at IGNOU Headquarters. The learners can register themselves online to get the maximum benefit. At the regional centre level IGNOU is going to establish a placement cell very soon. Even after a decade, IGNOU Srinagar Regional Centre here operates from a rented building. Will we have a permanent campus of IGNOU in kashmir? IGNOU regional center Srinagar is serving the state in the field of education for the last 12 long years, but unfortunately we are still operating from the rented building which certainly creates hurdles in ourexpansion in terms of all latest facilities and infrastructure for learners which includes full fledged Gyan Vani radio studio, wi-fi enabled computers lab, EDUSAT hub, teleconferencing facility.
