SGMS band holds instrument drive STE. GENEVIEVE -- The Ste. Genevieve Middle School Band Program is holding an instrument drive the week of June 24th through June 28th. Community members are welcome to donate any band instrument, regardless of playing condition to the middle school program. “Our enrollment has tripled over the last several years,” says Ste. Genevieve Middle School Band Director Lindsey Elders. “For the second year in a row, we have approximately one hundred students in grades 6th through 8th. Almost all of our current school owned instruments are in use. Our program is growing, and this is a good problem to have!” Any instrument donated will be repaired and added to the Ste. Genevieve Schools inventory. That instrument will then be owned by the school, but available to students to use throughout their band student careers. “If someone donates an instrument to our program, it will directly go into the hands of a student. He or she will be able to take it home for practice and play it for concerts and competitions. It’s important that our program is accessible to every single student who shows an interest in instrumental music,” says Elders. “We don’t want to turn kids away who want to be in band, but can’t afford it. That is why it’s so crucial to have these instruments available. Some of our students will major in music and choose it for a career, while other ones just play throughout their time here at the public school. Either way, band is a valuable and fun experience that not only teaches students how to play an instrument, but also teaches valuable life skills. All students deserve to have a chance to be in band!” Community members who are interested in donating an instrument to the Ste. Genevieve Middle School Band program, may drop off their instrument at the middle school office located 211 North 5th Street the week of June 24th through June28th, between the hours of 8 am and 3 pm. Please fill out a form upon your arrival with contact information, and place the form in the instrument case. Lindsey Elders will have your instrument assessed at Nottelmann Music Company. In August, you’ll receive a tax exemption letter regarding your instrument donation. “If you are interested in donating an instrument, but can’t make it to school that week,” Elders says, “Call me at 573-450-3732, and I’ll meet up with you at a place and time of your convenience.” “One of my favorite parts of my job is handing a sixth grader their instrument for the first time,” says Elders. “It’s like Christmas, but better. It’s the beginning of new experiences, opportunities, and fun memories. By making a donation, our community members can help put an instrument in a sixth grader’s hands.”
