Or so I thought… I was shocked and appalled to come across the online promotion of the “St. Jude Coon Hunt Benefit”, sponsored by the United Kennel Club, a St. Jude affiliate, and the Decatur County COON HUNTERS CLUB in Parsons, Tennessee, Decatur County’s WORLDS LARGEST COON HUNT BENEFIT FOR ST JUDE APRIL 10-14 2014 ukcdogs/Web.nsf/WebPages/Coonhounds/StJude This is the 39th Annual one too!!! In this 21st Century, for any reputable, life-affirming organization such as St Jude Childrens Hospital to benefit from cruel blood-sport events purported as “fun” is as confounding as it is disturbing. Coonhunting is an exemplified example of a blood-sport. This “sport” is beneficial to no end and not even respected by most hunters. It begins with defenseless animals used as live bait to train dogs (referred to as blooding the pups) and always ends in a bloody mess. In the field the hounds often wear GPS collars, a highly controversial tool because it defies Fair Chase ethics purported by Sportsmen. Another ethic expected yet also violated here is that a “Quick, clean kill” is achieved. Treeing an exhausted animal is not enough for coonhunters. Instead of shooting to kill, houndsmen shoot only to wound the cornered animal, forcing it to fall or descend from the tree. Allowing the dogs to “have their fun” is their warped, sadistic duty of tradition. The wounded raccoon has no chance. The fight is on and hopefully mercifully brief as she is shred to pieces by frenzied dogs. There is no meat or fur attained here. It is a bloodthirsty, animal screaming, “hunters” jeering ending that followed a pack of frenzied dogs slashing through the woods (and across private properties) in a deafening roar of baying hounds and chaos. With social media at the fingertips of an increasingly compassionate society, news like this travels quickly. There is an abundance of well deserving child welfare organizations for a compassionate donor to contribute to today; a glimpse at one youtube video exposing the sadistic act of coonhunting is all it takes to amend the recipients name for the next check written. Given the fact that raccoon hunting is so insidiously inhumane, it is unimaginable how a humanitarian organization such as St Jude Children’s Hospital would participate and condone something so cruel. You who put animals over the lives of sick children honestly sicken me. After contactiong St. JUDEs and your response was you will take donations from this and any other such event. So I will tell other people No more donations for St.-Jude!!!!! I ask you to please reconsider their affiliation with this appalling event.
