SHARP COOKIE MAKES dough before Pompeii blows! Pompeii lacked charge cards but it had rapacious moneylenders aplenty. Among them? Faustilla, known for her hard-nosed business dealings. She and other loan sharks worked out of gaming dens and taverns, often using the walls instead of paper documents. Archaeologists have found her transactions on various walls. A typical day’s work: she made loans of 15 and 20 denarii, charging monthly interest of 45 percent per year! This entrepreneur also collected collateral; from one desperate female client, she took a hood and earrings as security for a loan. These details were duly noted on walls that survived the destruction of Pompeii in A.D. 79---proving once again that loan sharks really DO live forever.
