SHARPEN YOUR AXE “If the iron be blunt, and he do not whet the edge, then must he put to more strength: but wisdom is profitable to direct.” (Ecclesiastes 10:10) In many homes, offices, schools and Church organizations, many pieces of equipment and furniture go into disuse as a result of poor or lack of maintenance. Manufacturing companies that do not improve on the quality of their products by adopting new tools and methods of production would soon lose the market to more innovative ones. The story is told of John, a woodcutter, who worked in a company for 5 years without increase in pay. However, when the company hired Bill, he got a pay rise within a year. John complained to the boss and was told that Bill got more pay because he was cutting more trees. John tried to cut more but could not. Bill later explained to him that, “After every tree I cut, I take a break for two minutes and sharpen my axe.” Then he asked John, “When last did you sharpen your axe?” As a youth, when last did you sharpen your mental axe by effective study of your academic books and other relevant literature? As a Christian, do you read your Bible and meditate on it daily? Challenge: Sharpen your mind by reading and praying. Prayer: Lord, help me to be an effective workman.
