SHE WHIZ Op Ed piece by Nicholas Kristof in todays NYTimes focuses on gender bias. Turns out research has found hurricanes named for females are more deadly than those named for males because people tend to think of them as dainty or wimpish and fail to take appropriate precautions. The article takes the concept beyond the weather, but thats enough to make the point. Whats in a name? If its a hurricane it can be death, so leave your bias at home and head for the hills.
