SHIRK (POLYTHEISM): ............................. The opposite of Tawheed is expressed by the Arabic term Shirk (polytheism), derived from the root Sh-r-k which conveys the notion of “sharing” or “partnerships.” The term Shirk means associating partners with Allah, and the related term Mushrik; is applied to someone guilty of such polytheistic association. Murder, rape, child molesting and genocide; all these can be forgiven but NOT Shirk. When a man murders, rapes or steals, the injustice which is done is directed primarily at other humans. But when a man commits shirk, the injustice is directed towards the Creator of the heavens and the earth; Allah. “Allah says in the Noble Qur`an that Shirk is the greatest sin.” (Qur’an 31: 14). “He also says that He will forgive all other sins if He wishes, except Shirk(Polytheism)” (Qur’an 4:49). Muslims must understand the term Shirk (polytheism) and be conceptually and practically clear that it is diametrically opposed to, Tawheed, the affirmation to the Oneness of Allah. Major Shirk (SHIRK AKBAR) Includes: .................................... •Shirk ad Du’a – invoking or supplicating to something other than or besides Allah. These ‘gods’ can be in any kind of form, whether cosmic objects, animals, pious ancestors, spirits, jinn or human beings such as priests, kings or rulers. •Shirk al-Niyah wa Iraada wal Qasd – having the intention and determination to deliberately worship a deity other than Allah. •Shirk at- Ta’a – obeying any created being while disobeying the command of Allah (i.e. when one takes a lawgiver or lawmaker other than Allah). •Shirk al-Muhabbah – loving a created being or an object more than Allah. •Shirk al- khafi – means the hidden, or covert, association of partners with Allah, the One and Only God. This is an insidious form of Shirk. Minor Shirk (SHIRK AS-GHAR) Includes: ......................... •Shirk ar- Reya –carrying out religious acts to show off in order to gain praise or fame, or for worldly purposes. •Shirk at- Tasmee – swearing by other than Allah. •To adorn something that is believed to be a form of ‘protection from misfortune’ •To practice, involve or believe in any form of Sihir (sorcery) including charms, incantations, astrology etc. •To believe in ‘fortune-telling’, Horoscopes, etc. •To believe in evil omens (this happens when a person intends to do something, but decides not to do it because of experiencing or ‘seeing’ certain evil signs or omens). •To have no acceptance of the predestination of Allah (lack of Redha). This leads to being inwardly dissatisfied with an inevitable condition that has been ordained for one by Allah (S.W.T); to continuously lament that if one had not done such and such a thing, one would have had a better result. Are Good Deeds by a Polytheist Accepted by GOD? ........................................................ Never!!! None of the deeds are accepted when mixed with polytheism. Allah the Exalted says: “If they had joined in worship others with Allah all that they used to do would have been of no benefit to them.” (Qur’an 6:88, 39:65) “Verily! Allah forgives not setting up partners in worship with Him, but He forgives whom He pleases sins other than that.” (Qur’an 4:116)
