SHOPIAN (J&K) Dec 14: Dozens of people in South Kashmir’s Shopian district hold a sit-in protest on polling day seeking justice with the alleged rape and murder victims of 2009. Shopian is going for polls today in the fourth phase along with 17 other constituencies of Srinagar, Anantnag and Samba districts. Family members, relatives and other people early morning assembled at Jamia market of main town, holding placards written with ‘No development can wash our memories’ ‘From Kunan-Poshpora to Shopian – All survivors are united’ etc, the protesters sat on a main road of the town. 6-year-old Suzain (son of Neelofar) sat in the protest from early morning seeking answers to his questions ‘Where his mother is?’ The sit-in protest was joined by several women also, who later started chanting anti-indian and pro-azadi slogans. Talking to media, Shakeel Ahmad (husband of Neelofar and brother of Aasiya said) “The election process here is a military exercise, no judicial system exists here then for what purpose we cast our votes.” adding “Kashmir is a disputed territory and no elections can change its nature till a plebiscite will be held here” Later the protesters dispersed peacefully. Pertinently, 25 year old Neelofar and her sister-in- law 17 year old Aasiya were allegedly raped and killed by men in uniform in the year 2009. Following mass protests, the state government ordered a probe. However, findings by CBI said that the two women drowned hence died. Locals contested the claims of CBI, but the case was closed.
