SHOULD WE RACE THROUGH THE WILDERNESS? This is a story about a guy racing up the Pacific Crest Trail at 55 miles a day. I cant seem to bring the link up with a headline but urge you to read it. I have deeply mixed feelings about this. I certainly honor this mans fitness and I admire his doing this to support cancer research, but why is it that we are so crazy about speed records in wilderness that should be savored and appreciated for itself. The wilderness is a place to slow down, contemplate, be grateful for the beauty of life, not set speed records in our endlessly competitive culture. I think this issue needs to be addressed. Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Natures peace will flow into you... wrote John Muir. But not at 55 miles a day. These are sacred places. This is part of the message of my new film. September 3, 2014 is the 50th anniversary of the Wilderness Act...I think it should be a time to reflect on what wilderness is for. seattletimes/html/localnews/2024221697_pacificcrestrunner02xml.html
