SHRC chairman meets Governor Srinagar, Mar 4 (KNS): Rafiq Fida, acting Chairman of State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) called upon N.N. Vohra, the Governor of J&K State and apprised him about the overall functioning and working of the Commission, said the official spokesman. The statement issued to KNS maintained that during the interaction, various aspects regarding the functioning of the Commission were discussed threadbare and the Governor was pleased to express his overall satisfaction on the role and functioning of the Commission. The Governor expressed his keen interest and concern and emphasized the need to do more to mitigate the sufferings of the people of the state who have suffered a great deal during the turmoil from last more than two decades. He said that the citizens of the State are our own people whose rights viz-aviz Human Rights need to be upheld, respected and protected. He has reiterated the commitment to protect the Human Rights in the State. He has also felt a need to organize seminars in Colleges, Schools and other institutions and spread awareness among the masses regarding various aspects of Human Rights. He said that the Commission, which is a statutory autonomous body, has to accelerate its working and reach out to people and contribute to restore peace in J&K. The Governor said that the number of complaints regarding militancy related cases has decreased, but has expressed his displeasure regarding the role and approach of the Police while controlling mob and felt need to impart knowledge and awareness regarding the various facets and aspects of Human Rights among the Police force and expected that Police will surely uphold, respect and protect Human Rights while dealing with the unruly mob and restrain from use of excessive force. Mr. Rafiq Fida has also expressed his satisfaction and was grateful that the Governor has given a patient hearing to the problems and difficulties which the Commission is facing while discharging its legitimate duties. Mr. Rafiq Fida has also handed over a Memorandum to the Governor covering in detail the facts and figures regarding the cases decided and pending before the Commission for adjudication. The Governor has expressed his concern over the growing trend of violence against women who form important and indivisible part of our society and the Commission has a very vital role to protect their rights. #Bhat_Basit
