"SIMULTANEOUS DISEQUATION" - by: Omoaholo Omoakhalen From the reports reaching us, the West African Examination Council has been barred from conducting mathematics examination in Nigerian schools. A new mathematics examination body, which is yet to be named, has been established. This is because the math syllabus and methods approved by WAEC have been found to be inaccurate in the Nigerian context. A new syllabus has been announced and the effect is backdated. Consequently the grades awarded in mathematics by WAEC to Nigerians from the inception of the examination body in 1952 up to 2013 are no longer acceptable in Nigeria. Therefore, every certificate awarded within the period has been recalled. The new examination body though unnamed has directed that every teacher who has ever taught arithmetic in Nigerian elementary schools and mathematics in primary and secondary schools must apologize for having taught inaccurate arithmetic. It has also directed that every Nigerian university that has awarded a degree in mathematics or in any discipline that has used the hitherto acceptable rules of mathematics particularly in relation to equations and inequalities must review and if possible, recall that degree. These hard-line decisions are coming in the wake of the changing rules of mathematics in view of the discovery of a new approach to the subject by certain Nigerian geniuses. This new approach has brought about the creation of a new topic called Simultaneous Disequation. It has directed that every Nigerian must therefore return his/her WAEC certificate whether it is named SSC or WASSC. New certificates will be issued in situ upon the successful re-take of the examination in which only one question will be asked. The question will be based on this newly discovered approach to mathematics also known as Anomalous Inequalities. The examination is restricted to Nigerians because the new rule has so far been found to apply only in Nigeria. As soon as it is proven to be applicable in other countries, their various examination and professional bodies will take a cue from Nigeria. However, in order to ensure that everyone gets back his/her certificate as soon as it is returned so as to forestall the human resource crises the new development could present, the new examination body has released a preview of the examination question as well as the answer and marking scheme. In other words, the new body has released expo ahead of the examination. The question that will be asked is presented below: 16 >19 and 5 > 27. Prove it. The answer and the workings are presented below along with the marks allotted for each step. Note that this genre of mathematics makes use of historical and other data. Every Nigerian is advised to study it carefully as strict adherence to the steps is required: _________________________________________________________________________________________________ Step 1: State the problem … 10 Marks 16 > 19 … Disequation 1 5 > 27 … Disequation 2 Step 2: State Condition for Simultaneous Disequation … 10 Marks i. If it involves politics ii. If it involves the president and a governor. iii. If the political party involved is the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) where the president is the leader of the party such that in the reckoning of the party, president > governor. iv. If there is clash of political interests between the president and the governor such that pro-president = anti-governor and pro-governor = anti-president (The principle is:“The enemy of my friend is my enemy”). v. If there is a precedent of the occurrence of disequation relating to the party, then 16 > 19 and 5 > 27 Step 3: Highlight Factors and Variables … 10 Marks • Factors: Governor Rotimi Amaechi, President Goodluck Jonathan (with Goodluck Jonathan out of the country on the two occasions) • Variables from Disequation 1: Governor Jonah Jang and 15 Pro-Jang Governors, Governor Rotimi Amaechi and 18 pro-Amaechi governors • Variables from Disequation 2: 5 Anti-Amaechi lawmakers particularly Evans Bipi, 27 Pro-Amaechi lawmakers (particularly, Otelemaba Dan Amachree). Step 4: Test the Cases for Satisfaction of the Conditions for Disequation … 20 Marks Condition 1: It involves politics. Condition 2: It involves President Jonathan and Governor Amaechi. Condition 3: The political party involved is the PDP, therefore, President Jonathan > Governor Amaechi. Condition 4: There is clash of political interests between President Jonathan and Governor Amaechi. Proof of Condition 4: i. In spite of the denials by the presidency of the existence of a feud between Jonathan and Amaechi due to clash of political interests, events clearly show that there is an ongoing political battle. ii. It has been linked to Amaechi’s rumoured interest in the 2015 elections as vice-presidential candidate to Sule Lamido or Babangida Aliu. iii. 2015 posters have been reported in Abuja and Dutse though Amaechi denies involvement. iv. This has reportedly infuriated President Jonathan and his supporters and turned them against Amaechi even though Jonathan denies this and has not admitted his own interest in the 2015 elections. v. The denial by both President Jonathan and Governor Amaechi is normal in politics. It is called “plausible deniability”. However, in the court of the people, judicial notice has been taken of these facts. Hence, there is no need to belabour the issue. However, certain key developments are presented below: i. March 2012, PDP accuses Amaechi of planting his loyalists into the National Working Committee of the party and of hijacking the NGF for his vice-presidential ambition. ii. February 24 2013, after falling out with Amaechi on Amaechi’s plan to recontest the NGF elections (a plan that would aid Amaechi’s alleged 2015 ambition), President Jonathan and his allied PDP chairman, Bamanga Tukur facilitate the formation of the PDP Governors’ Forum at the presidential villa to rival the NGF and they present GodswillAkpabio, a pro-Jonathan governor as its Chairman. iii. May 9 2013: A coded report links a “prominent female opponent” of Governor Amaechi “based in Abuja but a career civil servant in the Bayelsa State civil service” to a “plot to finish off the governor” as the female politician charged security agents in a secret meeting to emulate a Commissioner of Police who is seen to be biased against the governor. The people’s court has taken judicial notice of the fact that the description of the female politician fits Dame Patience Jonathan who is known to be a backbone of her husband, Goodluck Jonathan, and a staunch opponent of Amaechi. Therefore, there is an ongoing political battle between President Jonathan and Governor Amaechi thereby fulfilling Condition 4. Condition 5: The president is the leader of PDP and, in the reckoning of the party, President > Governor. Condition 6: There is disequational precedent in the PDP: November 13 2006, Governor Joshua Dariye of Plateau State was impeached by 6 out of the 24 members of the House of Assembly aided by the President Obasanjo-led federal government. Therefore, in PDP, 6 > 24 if the President is on the side of the 6, because, President Obasanjo> Governor Dariye such that: President Obasanjo+ 6 > Governor Dariye+ 24 (This is called the Oga at the Top Principle). But President Obasanjo and Governor Dariye are technically neutral as they are not members of the House of Assembly though their full weights count, Therefore, 6 > 24 Therefore there is disequational precedent in the PDP. Against the backdrop of the fact that a number of elections relating to the PDP have been characterized by victory for the candidate with the lowest number of genuine votes as proven in the cancellation of results by the election tribunals for Edo, Osun, Ondo, Sokoto, Kogi, Delta, Adamawa and Cross River States following the 2007 elections, any of these cases can be paired with the Jos case to achieve Simulataneous Disequation. With these conditions fulfilled, we can now prove that 16> 19 and 5 > 24 Step 4: Analysis of Present Cases (Cases 1 and 2 attract a total of 40 marks) Case 1 … 20 Marks To prove that 16 > 19, May 24 2013: President Jonathan travels to Addis Ababa. May 24 2013: Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) Chairmanship Elections Procedure: Amaechi v Jang (Secret Ballot) Result: Amaechi = 19: Jang = 16 May 24 2013 (post-election): Jang declares self winner, sets up faction of NGF, thereby proposing that 16 > 19. May 25 2013 (post-election): President Jonathan reportedly misses speech slot at African Union Summit due to his disappointment at the NGF election results though he denies this was the cause. May 27 2013: PDP suspends Amaechi. June 17 2013: Jang arranges meeting of NGF faction at 6pm. June 17 2013: President Jonathan sets up meeting with governors at 10pm. June 17 2013: Jang’s Governors’ Forum meeting is attended by the 16 governors including Jang; Amaechi and the 18 governors are absent; Jang’s Governors’ Forum meeting dovetails into meeting of the 16 with President Jonathan; president’s meeting with Jang’s faction is cordial Therefore, Jang faction (16 votes) is recognized by President Goodluck Jonathan. June 26 2013:Amaechi calls NGF meeting at 8pm, invites all governors. June 26 2013: President Goodluck Jonathan calls for banquet at 8pm, invites all governors. June 26 2013: Presidential banquet clashes with Amaechi’s NGF meeting; Amaechi calls off meeting in deference to the president and leads pro-Amaechi governors to president’s banquet; Amaechi is shunned by president; Akpabio is introduced as Chairman of PDP Governors’ Forum; President does not recognize Amaechi as NGF Chairman; Amaechi is prevented by presidential guard from greeting president. Therefore, Amaechi’s faction (19 votes) is not recognized by president Therefore, pro-Jang = pro-Jonathan Since in PDP, President > Governor, Then Jonathan > Amaechi, Then, President Jonathan + Jang + 16>19 (The Oga at the Top principle) But President Jonathan is technically neutral as he is not a member of the NGF though his full weight counts, Therefore, 16 > 19. Case 2 … 20 Marks To prove that 5 > 27 June 15 2013: Patience Jonathan visits Rivers State amidst rumours of plan to unseat the governor, which she denies; she attends wedding of a member of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Evans Bipi, who is reportedly her brother. June 8 2013: President Jonathan travels to China. July 8 2013: Dan Amachree, Speaker of Rivers State House of Assembly, summons members for plenary session of the House; sensing crisis, the Speaker reportedly requests police presence; Meanwhile Evans Bipi allegedly connives with Police Commissioner to besiege the house with police and members of the Joint Task force the next day. July 9 2013: At the plenary Session of the Rivers State House of Assembly; house besieged by armed police and military men; Evans Bipi arrives with thugs and takes over the house, reportedly battering the House leader, Chidi Lloyd with police and military men looking on; the pro-Amaechi lawmakers reportedly run to the governor for reinforcement; the 5 pro-Jonathan lawmakers vote to impeach the Speaker, Dan Amachree and elect new Speaker; Evans Bipi, Patience Jonathan’s brother is elected new “Speaker” by the 5; Amaechi reportedly arrives with his own security forces in the company of the 27; there is struggle among security forces apparently between the pro- and anti-Amaechi forces; pro-Amaechi lawmakers overpower the pro-Jonathan lawmakers; an angry Chidi Lloyd batters an anti-Amaechi lawmaker July 10 2013:The presidency denies Jonathan’s involvement; this is expected since technically, the president must be seen as neutral. However, the president has not condemned the undemocratic “impeachment” of the speaker. July 10 2013: Soldiers and Armored Personnel Carriers attached to the governor’s house are withdrawn and Amaechi raises alarm over his safety; though the military refuses to disclose the source of the order to withdraw the soldiers, the President is the Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces and controls the soldiers. Therefore, from the facts above, unless proven otherwise, one can conclude that the president, as well as his wife, is on the side of the five. Therefore, where 5 = Evans Bipi + 4 lawmakers, President Jonathan + Patience Jonathan + 5 > Governor Amaechi + 27 (The Oga at the Top Principle) But President Jonathan, Patience Jonathan and Rotimi Amaechi are technically neutral as they are not members of the House of Assembly though their full weights count, Therefore 5 > 27 Conclusion… 10 Marks From the foregoing, 16 > 19 and 5 > 27, QED. _________________________________________________________________________________________________ As has been stated earlier, every Nigerian will take this test on the spot and must work out the steps as presented. The facts may be improved upon but the steps must be adhered to. Finally, reports just reaching us suggest that Dame Patience Jonathan and Deziani Allison Madueke have been nominated for the post of Chairman of the new mathematics examination body though the body is yet to be named. The final candidate will be elected separately by the Senate and the House of Representatives. It is certain that the computation of the outcome of this elections will fall under this new genre of mathematics called Simulataneous Disequation. What is not certain, however, is whom the Oga at the Top principle will favour. The reports also suggest that Nigerians may be asked to predict in whose favour this principle will work as a bonus question in the exams. If this is true, in your own interest, I suggest you skip it. Goodluck to you, Nigerians! By Omoaholo Omoakhalen
