SLCO Spearheads Jounen Kwéyòl Entenasyonnal 2013 in New York --- Theme: One Caribbean, One History, One People, One Culture --- Brooklyn, NY - Saint Lucians in the Diaspora will be celebrating fifteen (15) years of Jounen Kweyol, organized by the St. Lucian Cultural Organization, (SLCO), the Group which originally started it here in New York, and which has steadfastly maintained the event as a vital connection with our culture. For all of the last celebrations, it has been a narrow St. Lucian event, but this year the focus has been to enlarge the scope to include all of our sister communities in the Diaspora that had a historic link with Kweyol Culture. This year, we are linking with groups from Haiti, the Commonwealth of Dominica, and Trinidad to make Jounen Kweyol a Pan- Caribbean event. On Sunday, October 27, Jounen Kweyol starts off with a Kweyol Mass at 10:30am at the St. Teresa of Avila Church in Brooklyn, followed by a Kweyol Brunch from 12:00-2:00pm, and a festival of Kweyol culture that includes live performances by various groups from our sister Kweyol communities. The location is the parish auditorium: 563 Sterling Place, Brooklyn. The St Lucia Cultural Organization is a 15-year-old, 501(c)(3) non-profit, that uses our common culture and folk traditions to bring together the estimated 800,000 strong Caribbean-American Diaspora. Our signature event has been the annual Jounen Kwéyòl Entenasyonnal (International Kreyol Day) cultural celebration event on the last Sunday of October. This year, based on our evaluation of needs, proceeds from that fund-raising event go to two charities: the Ciceron Children’s Home in St. Lucia, and to an orphanage in Haiti run by the Collège Sacré Coeur de Jésus at Croix-des-Bouquets (We wish to note that under US tax law, only registered 501(c)(3) class organizations can raise funds from these kinds of events, and that the St. Lucian Cultural Organization is in full compliance with that law, as well as other relevant Liquor license statutes).
