SLIP SLIDIN AWAY It was on June 25, 1967, that Expos turnstiles counters recorded its 15 millionth visitor (name unknown) after only 59 days since the opening. The original figure of 30 millions for the duration of the exhibition would be strongly exceeded. Another statistic on the admissions, the Hovercrafts carrying visitors from Cité du Havre recorded their 100 000th passenger, at the rate of 3 500 persons per day (photo) Another kind of visit was the two Canadian ice-breaker, the Simon Fraser and the Sir Charles Tupper, who arrived at the Mark-Drouin quay. Approximately 500 million viewers from around the world watched a historic television program, broadcast live through four telecommunications satellites. The Montréal segment focuses on Expos response of the universal problem of urban living, Habitat 67. Some mixed comments come from Professor Bruno Zevi, a prominent Italian architect who said that the only really interesting pavilions were Moshe Safdies Habitat and Buckminster Fullers geodesic dome. In order to really appreciate Habitat, he says, “one has to live in it, because only then does one become aware of both its functional soundness and aesthetic appeal” Other pavilions, he claims, doesnt innovate. They are simply good answers to poor questions and prima donnas who will disappear.” (Source: Day by Day, The Expo Story edited by Yves Jasmin / Photo: Unknown)
