SMRITI IRANIS ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS Did you watch Smriti Irani on pre-election TV discussions and debates? I for one keenly observed the way she batted for the BJP. She was supremely confident, intelligent, focused and articulate. In most such debates she floored her rivals, some of them eminent lawyers, with her skillfully crafted arguments and her free-flowing English. On a panel of representatives of different political parties debating on issues like Gujarat 2002, her criticism of Narendra Modi, her change of heart, secularism vs communalism and all, she undoubtedly emerged as an outstanding speaker. As BJPs spokesperson she impressed all including the high and mighty Arnab Goswami. Her English was immaculate. Smart congress spokespersons on TV debates were seen scurrying for cover when Smriti was in full flow. That she agreed to fight the Loksabha elections from Amethi against a well entrenched Rahul Gandhi speaks of her courageous spirit. It was like challenging the lion, or shall I say a perpetual cub, in his own den. And she did make it into a spectacular fight…..a fight to watch. The tide in Amethi had turned in her favor despite her late entry into the fray. She was organized and hardworking in her campaign and her ability to connect with the masses was beyond doubt. Ground reports scared the Congress strategists so much that they had to ultimately call Priyanka to Amethi for a last minute appeal to the electorate. Perhaps Mrs Gandhi herself wanted to be reassured about Rahul s prospects. Priyanks’s road-show worked and Rahul managed to win. However, Smriti was not humiliated in her defeat. All this criticism about her lack of superior academic qualification appears to have born out of desperation. She may not have academic qualifications to match with Mani Shankar Aiyer, Kapil Sibbal or Abhishek Manu Singhavi, who would deny that she has graduated through the best educational institution……the University of Life. Her example gives decent burial to the theory propagated by male chauvinists that beauty and intelligence are mutually exclusive. She will surely prove to be a successful minister.
