SNOWFALL RISK: The final guidance of the aforementioned storm has thrown up some very interesting results. The system which was expected to cross to the north of the country is now in actual fact expected to cross to the south of the country. This southern passage means that the midlands will remain on the cold side of the low pressure with top temperatures through tomorrow expected to peak at around 3-4 degrees Celsius. This development opens up the possibility of a snowfall event across many areas of the Midlands. The areas which are most at risk of seeing snowfall are those in northern areas such as Roscommon, Longford and north Westmeath. All areas are at risk however, these are just the areas most at risk. Areas of high ground such as the Arigna mountains of Roscommon, Cairn Hill in Longford, Mullaghmeen and the Westmeath hills over 200 metres, the Slieve Bloom Mountains, and the hills around the Castlecomer plateau. Areas of high ground may see accumulations of between 5 and 10 cm of snow, possibly 15 cm over the higher mountains. Low level areas may see up to 5 cm of snowfall. This is a very unpredictable situation and I will continue to bring you further updates throughout the next 24 hours. Some areas of the Midlands no doubt will see snow, however temperatures may just be too warm for low level snowfall in some areas. Saturdays conditions continue on a rather wintry note with plenty of heavy wintry showers of sleet and snow possible in many areas of the region, and the continued risk of snowfall over hills and mountains especially, however I wouldnt be surprised to see some small accumulations even to low levels especially across the North. Sunday, Monday and Tuesday will be very cold days across the region with daytime highs reaching just 4 to 5 degrees Celsius, and night time lows dipping as low as -6 or even -7 in a few frost hollows.These low temperatures combined with wet roads from recent precipitation will lead to some very dangerous driving conditions so extreme caution is advised on the roads of the Midlands over the coming week or so.
