SNitzsche Fun Fact #22 of 44: I struggled with including this, but its one of the most defining aspects of my life to this point, so theres really no skating around it. It doesnt take a psych degree to see how my moderate personality was informed by this event, and Im sure it means something that I felt it belonged smack in the middle of this whole 44 part exercise... A quick disclaimer: I wont discourage comments, but there are wonderful people on both sides of this divide who participate in my FB page, so I ask for that to be kept in mind if conversation occurs. Get to the point already? Good idea. I was adopted at 8 years old and spent the next 10 years in my uncle and aunts care. I was plenty old enough to start forming my own picture of the world, so it was a struggle to integrate into this new way of life which was very, very different from the old way, in EVERY way. Two amazing cousins became sisters, and I was pulled back from becoming a thieving little street urchin (Literally...I was stealing from gas stations, grocery stores, and friends houses at 7 yrs. old), so good things came from that decade, though its always easier to focus on the negative...and I do fall into that trap sometimes even 30 years later. I am DEF-initely an advocate for adoption. While mine was not ideal (but certainly not a horror story by any means), and adopting a baby is infinitely easier on everyone than adopting an older child, if hearts are in the right place it can be a very positive, life-changing experience for child and parent alike.
