SO GREAT. Letter from the APA reads: ...The American Philosophical Association and the PhilPapers Foundation are pleased to announce New Appointments in Philosophy, a new service through PhilJobs: Jobs for Philosophers. This database of new appointments in philosophy departments worldwide will allow standardized collection of demographic and other data about appointments in philosophy. It will also provide a way to systematically disseminate news of recent appointments. The service is now available at the following URL: philjobs.org/appointments/ The website provides users with a list of new appointments, in reverse chronological order by submission. Users can also display appointments in various categories: senior/tenured, junior/untenured, fellowships, and others. The site also provides RSS feeds for each of these categories and a search engine. We encourage those involved with the appointments process to submit information about new appointments as soon as they are finalized. Information can be submitted by the appointee, the appointees placement director, or by relevant members of the hiring department (e.g. chair, chair of search committee, administrator). In all cases the appointee and the hiring department will be asked to confirm the information and to provide demographic data. We invite submissions of appointments at any level: senior, junior, post-docs and other fellowships, visiting positions, adjunct positions, and so on. (At this time the system does not, however, accept graduate student appointments, such as teaching assistantships.) We are grateful to Brian Leiter and Carolyn Dicey Jennings for providing data about appointments from their websites, which we have used to seed the database. We are also grateful for the appointments listings that Leiter and others have provided in recent years. We have created the New Appointments in Philosophy service not out of dissatisfaction with other services, but because of the crucial need for demographic data to monitor the state of the profession. The new service will be of great assistance to the APA as it deals with issues concerning diversity and inclusiveness in the profession. Signed, Amy Ferrer Executive Director, American Philosophical Association David Bourget and David Chalmers Directors, PhilPapers Foundation
