SO! Im coaching a middle school dance team this year in eau claire- and Im super excited.. but I have noticed that the girls have been really pushed to the side in terms of opportunity. To give the school some credit, the dance team is a newer program, so things are still growing and changing... but one of my goals is to promote dance team as an equal sport to all of the others at their school. (good luck to me!) The team (made up of all girls this year) should be given the same experiences as the basketball team, made of boys, and the same experiences as the football team, made of boys, etc. I want this young girls to know they are important. Im going to give them a challenge in their choreography- to show they are capable of performing and worth gaining rights to traveling to competitions. and not only teach them dance, but also lead them to treat each other with respect, and stand side by side as a team. I plan to do this by devoting a part of their practices each week with a different question to get their minds going- and followed by a video that promotes strength in young girls. Example: What does it mean to do something like a girl? followed by: https://youtube/watch?v=XjJQBjWYDTs I want to bring the emotion out in these girls. Middle school is a brutal time that can be filled with bullying and shame. Im excited to teach these girls how worthy they are to be a girl. - and prove to the school with my mighty little team that they are AMAZING! and WORTH IT! :) if you have any suggestions or ideas- please let me know! :)
