SO YOU WANT TO DRAW COMICS? Ever fancied working in comics? If the answer is yes then you are probably wondering where to start. Well, the Melksham Comic Convention and the Comic Book Alliance will be giving artists interested in the medium a chance to show off their wares and pick up tips as 3 Grumpy Old Editors and their Carer descend upon the show on the 31st. Paul H. Birch, Steve Tanner and GM Jordan will be on hand doing portfolio reviews, offering guidance and advice. They will be giving the benefit of their years of experience to possibly the next generation of comic book professionals. “Reviews are a great way to get a friendly critique of your work, a professional eye as to where you may be going wrong and if you are good enough we may even recommend publishers you may like to show your work to.” GM Jordan explains. Currently an editor for Markosia, Jordan has done similar events around the UK and is quick to point out that artists may get lucky at shows such as Melksham. “It is great to talk to new artists and point them in the right direction, we did an event in London earlier on in the year and an artist I spoke to took on board the minor changes that had been suggested to great effect. The end result has been he is now working on three books, so these portfolio reviews can be very worthwhile.” Jordan continues, “I’m of an age where I have seen whole new generations of creators coming through and many have used the portfolio reviews to tighten up their work and develop their style.” Just Who Are The Grumpies? Steve Tanner is publisher and editor at Time Bomb and the man behind critically and fan acclaimed titles such as ‘Dick Turpin & the Restless Dead’, ‘London Calling’ and ‘Bomb Scares’. Paul H. Birch is a veteran writer and editor having worked for companies such as The Birmingham Mail, his work in comics includes editing the 2007 Eisner Award winning ‘Gumby Comics’. GM Jordan is a group editor for Markosia and his fan favourite creation ‘The Raggedy Man’ will be released by Corvus Press UK in 2014. Jordan is also one of the co-founders of the Comic Book Alliance. The Grumpies will be available throughout the day, although Steve will have to take time out to appear at publisher Time Bomb’s table. But do not fear a couple of reserves are ready to take his place so hopefully everyone will have a chance to show off their work. “Relax, come along, have fun. We may be grumpy but we don’t bite and if you are really good we might share our CBA cookies with you.” Three Grumpy Old Editors and their Carer will be appearing at the Melksham Comic Convention on Saturday 31st August from 11am.
