SO before the Robin Williams mourning and before the Ferguson - TopicsExpress

SO before the Robin Williams mourning and before the Ferguson fiasco, there was much talk on social media about feminism and how women are not treated well or equally even to the point of regular public degradation. If youve read and or seen any of my posts and links in the past three weeks, you know that I am very supportive of gender equality and find barbaric ideals despicable. There was one trending article, however, that stood out in my mind because it was unsettling to me. And only now that Ive had ample time to process it do I understand why. The article (I apologize for not having the link) was about women in movies - specifically that men outnumbered women 10 to 1 and that very few, if any, strong female characters existed. It went on to say that almost all of the time, if not all of the time, lead female characters always need a man to save them or exist only to help the lead character (a male) to evolve. The reason its unsettling to me is this. Whats wrong with needing help? There are almost no movies in which the lead character/s do not need help. Thats why theyre the lead/s. Kinda one of the points of life. Youre the lead character in your life... but sometimes you need help. That has very little to do with gender. If you are offended at all by my remarks, or feel inspired for any reason no matter who you are, I challenge you to write something about your feelings. Write it right here if you want to. Or anywhere.
