SO lately Ive been seeing this trend of women being asked to post pictures of themselves online without make up on and encourage their friends to do that same. While I always think its important to examine the reasons women cultivate their appearances in a certain way, I think this phenomenon can actually serve to reinforce the concept that women must always perform femininity in order to be respected/accepted in society, and seeing a woman without any make up on becomes an anomaly and a spectacle. Sort of gives me the creeps. Also the concept of having someone “call you out” to post of picture of yourself without makeup is extremely invasive and infringes on one’s freedom to present oneself to the world however they feel most comfortable. Obviously the aim was positivity, but I have only seen women posting these pictures with negative and self-deprecating comments about their appearances, so it hasn’t been very effective in my opinion. What are your thoughts on this? Plz share!
