SOAS Concert Series in 2015 Dear Friends Best wishes for a happy and peaceful New Year! Our Concert Series continues full steam for 2015, starting off with something different this Friday (16 Jan) and much more exciting music coming up. Dont forget you can listen again to past concerts on SOAS Radio by clicking here. We hope to see you soon at one of our concerts! Friday 16 January 2015 LONDON SACRED HARP Early Music from the New World Sacred Harp singing is an old a-cappella community singing tradition from the American South. Older than gospel, the tunes are so old that their origins are sometimes obscure. The music is sung in four parts, with octave doubling, and the composition style is often polyphonic. This singing tradition preserved forms and harmonic tastes that were swept away in Europe as classical choral and sacred music evolved. Sacred Harp has a fascinating history – like America itself, this music has its roots on this side of the Atlantic, but it has undergone a sea-change. The many generations of development in the New World have transformed it into something rare and distinctive. This evening is an opportunity to discover this unique form of singing, including the opportunity to try it for yourself. Friday 23 January 2015 OLCAY BAYIR Anatolian Song Sketches Carrying the enchanting musical heritage of Anatolian cultures, Olcay Bayir sings her own contemporary compositions to original arrangements of traditional folk songs spread across the region of Anatolia and Mesopotamia, unfolding ancient stories of love and mystery. Of Turkish-Kurdish origin, Olcay now lives in London, where her Western vocal training collides perfectly with her passion for the rich musical heritage of her homeland, allowing her to craft intricate and unusual melodic phrases, distinct harmonies and captivating, richly-layered textures. Her sensitive portrait of Anatolian culture sketches shade and light on the region’s fascinating musical interplay. Friday 06 February 2015 A OCA Earthy yet Sophisticated Amazonian Traditions A Oca is an exciting new project led by Gaio de Lima, exploring the rhythms, melodies and dances from the Amazonian and Northern Brazilian folk traditions. The ‘oca’ is a traditional indigenous Brazilian house, which is built collectively in around ten days using material from the jungle. This ‘oca’ is the centre of the community and it is often home to many families. Taking this essence of community and simplicity, A Oca brings you the sounds of the Amazon and the beauty of Northeastern Brazil - and all that in Central London. Expect music in its purest form: pifano bamboo flutes and a healthy dose of Brazilian percussion - dancing is welcome! Monday 23 February 2015 UK CHINESE MUSIC ENSEMBLE The Sound of Silk and Bamboo To celebrate the Chinese New Year (19 February) this evening of Chinese music showcases various string (si - silk) and bamboo (zhu -wind) instruments performing music from different regions, styles and ages. Besides traditional repertoires including Shanghai tea-house and Cantonese pieces, the group will also present some modern pieces by contemporary composers. This ensemble of excellent musicians regularly performs across London and abroad; tonight the line-up will feature erhu (2-stringed fiddle), pipa (4-stringed zither), yangqin (hammered dulcimer), guzheng (21-stringed zither), dizi (bamboo flute) and percussion. Monday 16 March 2015 JYOTSNA SRIKANTH Carnatic Nomad with a Violin A sought after British-Indian violinist and composer, Jyotsna Srikanth is known for her versatility and ability to collaborate with different genres seamlessly and with ease. She is intensely rooted in South Indian classical music alongside having formal Western classical music education; her violin playing is noted for its blend of bhava (musical expression and emotion) and a highly developed technique honed over three decades. As a performer and composer she has explored lush ground in the crossover between Indian music and a variety of contemporary flavours including jazz, Irish folk, flamenco, blues, Western classical and ‘Bollywood’ music. This evening she will present her recent album release ‘Carnatic Nomad’. Thursday 23 April 2015 LONDON KLEZMER QUARTET Fresh and Timeless: Klezmer As We Love It! The London Klezmer Quartet performs klezmer (the traditional music of Eastern Europe’s Jewish communities) at its most beguiling and seductive, giving space to the subtleties of the original tradition while combining it with a kick-the-chairs-over party spirit. The arrangements are acoustic and traditional - the playing is energetic and fresh. The all-female line-up features fiddle, clarinet, accordion and double bass. With artistry like this, the music doesnt need to be reinvented. (Evening Standard) Thursday 30 April 2015 ABDOULAYE SAMB & MINNJIARABY Senegalese Music with an Open Heart Minnjiaraby was founded by Abdoulaye Samb, a guitarist, singer and composer from Senegal, now based in London. His original music is inspired by Fula and Mandinka cultures among many others. The name of the band means love of mixing, which expresses the richness of Senegalese traditions and ethnicities, the beauty of them coming together, as well as an open-minded approach to all cultures and people, local and global alike. The music has grown from Abdoulayes travels, collaborations and research in Africa and Europe and pays tribute to open minds and open hearts.
