SOFT ANSWER. Sunday, November 9 “A soft answer turns away wrath, But a harsh word stirs up anger” Proverbs 15:1 A scene broke out at the screening point of our nation’s premier airport. A traveller placed his computer on the bare conveyor belt of the scanner. In an attempt to tell him to place it in a tray he became irritable and spoke some harsh words. That provoked the officer on duty, a lady, who asked whether he spoke to his wife at home in such uncouth manner. The officer went a little further: she insisted to check the carry-on bag, causing a little extra delay to the traveller. Our passage of Scripture tells how powerful words are. There are words that can arrest anger, stemming the worst out of our listeners. There are also words that can bring the worst out of those who hear us. No one can determine the extent of anger; it is therefore a wise thing to not deliberately say words that will get people mad at us. The rule of Scripture is that whatever comes out of our mouth should build up lives and not cast them down. And if we add conventional wisdom to this, then we must be quick to offer conciliatory words in terms of apology when our words made people mad. FURTHER STUDY: PROVERBS 15:1-12 PRAYER: Father, take away words of wrath from my tongue.
