SOFTBALL Babe Ruth U16 World Series. Del Rio Nitro comes back to defeat Midwest Plains, 8-7, in its opening game on Wednesday afternoon in Pittsfield, Mass. Nitro trailed 5-1 after the top of the third inning. Nitro stormed back with two runs in the fifth inning, three runs in the sixth and one run in the seventh. In the bottom of the seventh, Giselle Hernandez had a walk-off single, scoring Christiana Saenz. Nitro catcher Dariela Quiroz went 2-for-3 with a RBI, two runs scored and a walk. Quiroz was named player of the game. Saenz, a Nitro center fielder, was 2-for-3 with three runs scored. Nitro shortstop Clarissa Alarcon singled and scored twice. In relief, Cipriana Tobias kept Nitro in the game by allowing only one earned run over four innings. On Thursday, Nitro will play Kinnelon, N.J., at 11:15 a.m.
