SOFTBALL: The Kingston Kobras got off to a great start at the Ontario Select Softball Tournament Association Mite Girls Championship in Unionville on Saturday, winning both round-robin games by large scores to finish first in their pool and earn a quarter-final berth. In the first game, Emily Swaine started and shut out Richmond Hill as her team supported her with lots of offence in a 17-2 victory. Morgan Salter hits three doubles in three at-bats and Avery Collins and Olivia Anderson both had timely hits. Olivia Gilbert came on to relieve Swaine and those who managed to reach on a few walks were quickly erased by catcher Lacey Clark, who threw out three would-be base stealers and impressed enough to garner most valuable player honours for the game. In the next game, it was Kingston ace Alexa Oriecuia getting the start. After the first inning, Kingston was up 5-0 and Lacey Clark came in to pitch three solid innings, shutting down an inexperienced team from Aurora. Kingston tried to slow it down, but the bats were ablaze and the score ballooned to its final 21-3 count. Emma Weatherdon completed the game on the rubber and Swaine earned MVP honours, going 3-for-3 at the plate. Sunday, Kingston will play its biggest games of the year in its quest for gold. In the quarter-finals at 9 a.m., the Kobras take on the second-place team from Pool B. A win will put Kingston in a 1:30 p.m. semifinal game. Semifinal winners will play in the gold/silver medal match, with semifinal losers meeting for bronze, with both games at 3:45 p.m.
