SOLAR ENERGY IS STILL ENERGY FROM BURNING COAL WHICH SPEWS CO2 :(. - TopicsExpress

SOLAR ENERGY IS STILL ENERGY FROM BURNING COAL WHICH SPEWS CO2 :(. Of course all of us would like to contribute to the prevention of anthropogenic triggered climate change. And that is the reason why we try out other sources of energy/ electrical power, so that at least we can minimize the coal-fired power plant generation of electrical power. Without much thinking, it would appear that solar energy will be the cleanest form of energy source-- it is renewable and does not emit pollution. But is it? Lets look at the facts: 1. Solar cells are produced using Silicon and the production and mining of the raw materials are very harmful to the environment. 2. The service life of solar cells are short (less than 2 years); think how long does a purely solar powered calculator last. The short service life of solar cells are actually generating lots of plastic and Si refuse which pollute the environment. 3. The solar cells can not be stand alone, it is backed up by electricity which is often coal-fired power plant derived. Only in 2014 did we get the highest solar cell efficiency of about 44.7 %. -- which means that more than 50% of the energy will still come from the back up electricity (usually from coal). 4. space may also be an issue.
