Opening something, never closing it. A door through time and space, a pure experience of the senses, letting the brain free to wander around. There is something extremely free in the music of Jardín. Something impressive as impossible to catch. While at the same time, successful in delivering a pretty clear political statement. The cult noise/electronic band has been important in the Lima musical scene for many years now. That day they took us to a strange place at a strange time, a kindergarten at dusk, far in the suburbs of the never-ending city. It didnt make any sense. To this day, it doesnt make any sense to me. Until I watch the recording. And start to put all the elements together. And come up with a disturbing vision of the contemporary world. Its a dress made of 100 small speakers, so she could walk around and perform her music amplified. She got the idea during our recording in the ruins of Pachacamac, where no electricity was available. We need only one idea to make a film. Two ideas might be too much. The idea on that day was - lets go play in Pachacamac. And Pauchi played, with the wind, the stones, the elements around her. A little dérive without reason, just letting it go. I told Pauchi we would make another short film together. This time with her new dress, walking around in the Macchu Picchu. I just started my trip in Perú and the same melody was sticking to my mind, over and over again. Part of the resurgence of psychedelic stuff from the 70s, the renewal of Chicha (actually Cumbia Peruana music) was coming from outside - from a great compilation released in NY in 2010. At the same time, some elders from that specific music scene were put together to play their ancient hits, under the name Cumbia All Stars. We organized a little concert on a sunday afternoon on the only public square of the Independencia neighbourhood, in Lima, one of the most popular barrio around.
