Be prepared to revel in the high-fidelity world of Sony portable audio with this music machine at your next house party. From start-to-finish, this Sony boombox‘s conceptual design, studio-grade performance, features, value and fitness for professional DJ applications is simply state-of-the-art. Sony’s XPLOD boombox is a fundamental expression of the company’s technical dominance of the portable audio landscape. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G700CP boombox features best-in-class powered speakers with 5 drivers that produce big sound, bold sound and superb sound for almost any size room, portable audio application or entertainment event. This stereo can play loudly with detailed dynamic low bass that far exceeds the traditional deep-toned parameters of the boombox category. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G700CP boombox will play at such loud volumes while producing audiophile-grade sound that it is just perfect for the listening interests of the most demanding boombox enthusiast. This Sony boombox, because of its Full-Range Speakers and Power Drive Woofer backed by a discrete 20 Watt (Root Mean Square or RMS) digital power amplifier, can successfully compete in sound quality with expensive component stereos. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G700CP Portable Stereo utilizes two dedicated amplifiers to power the Mid-Range Drivers and the super bass producing Power Drive Woofer. The separate power amplifier blocks allocate 12 Watts (RMS) of power to the center bass speaker and 8 Watts (RMS) total power output (4W + 4W @ 10% T.H.D.) to the mid-range drivers. Since this Sony XPLOD CFD-G700CP boombox features the ultimate aggressive power design, I no longer have a need for that large stereo in my home. In fact, it is almost a slight of this product to call it a boombox because of its unique and powerful sound that it produces. The large and beautiful red speaker arrangement consists of two cone type 4-inch (101.6 mm) diameter Loudspeaker Drivers, two 0.8-inch (13/16” or 20.32 mm) diameter dome type Metal Tweeters and a 5-1/8 inch (130.17 mm) diameter cone type Power Drive Woofer with three distinct levels of bass adjustment. The Power Drive Woofer features Position Off, Position 1 and Position 2 bass reinforcement settings. The Power Drive Woofer rests in an acoustically tuned cabinet that is designed to achieve maximum low frequency bass response. The Power Drive Woofer features an LED illumination ring that surrounds the center bass speaker. The Power Drive Woofer illumination ring lights up in two distinct variations of bright red when the woofer is engaged. The Power Drive Woofer (P.D.W.) is activated by pressing the large black Woofer control on the main unit. The drivers feature an impressive impedance rating of 3.2 ohms while the P.D.W. features a 4.2 ohms nominal impedance rating. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G700CP Portable Stereo is housed within a massive boombox chassis that bespeaks quality, elegance and acoustic prowess within the portable audio kingdom. The stereo’s augmented weight, special P.D.W. lighting effects and sleek contoured shape present the user with an immediate awareness of its intrinsic quality, awesome features and amazing sonic properties across the Radio, Tape and CD inputs. The Sony XPLOD boombox feature set is the best that I have ever seen in this category. Resume play starts from the beginning of the track/MP3 file that the boombox was playing when play was last stopped. Resume play is cancelled once the CD compartment door is opened, the CD Stop button is pressed twice consecutively and it does not work during program or shuffle play modes. You can record homemade CD-R/CD-RW discs with MP3 files and Microsoft Windows Media Audio (.WMA) files burned on them to Type I normal bias cassette with the Sony XPLOD CFD-G700CP boombox’s cassette recorder. The CD Player can play copies of audio discs created in compact disc recorders. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G700CP boombox can copy audio tracks from compact discs to cassette. The cassette player is not compatible with the Digital Compact Cassette or Digital Audio Tape formats. The Sony boombox’s CD Player can’t play CD-I data tracks as they will be automatically skipped. Discs labeled with the CD+G logo or CD-DA music discs with embedded video clips or music videos will play in the CD Player but the video clips will be skipped for playback. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G700CP boombox works with all brands of compact disc recordable media but I recommend Sony CD-R/RW media for best playback results. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G700CP boombox’s Volume Controls are located on the far right side of its top panel. The volume can be decreased or increased in 3-segment increments on a 0-10 volume scale. The line segment volume scale is depicted on this portable stereo’s LCD. Pressing or holding a Volume Control will decrease or increase the volume rapidly as needed. A full-function 27-Key remote commander is included for convenient control of the portable stereo from a short distance away. The model number of the remote control is RMT-CG700A. The remote control has numerous buttons to enhance the functionality of this Sony XPLOD CFD-G700CP Portable Stereo. The remote can power the stereo on in AC power mode only and turn it off in battery and AC power modes by pressing the green Power button. There is a 0-90 minute sleep timer which can power the radio off automatically at six selectable intervals of time. To activate the sleep timer, the user must first play any music source that the Sony XPLOD CFD-G700CP Portable Stereo offers (Radio, Cassette or CD). Next, press the Sleep button on the remote commander or the boombox. Each press of the Sleep button will cycle the sleep timer via the LCD to the following: “Auto-60min-30min-20min-10min-off.” If the “auto” feature is selected, the stereo will automatically turn itself off after a 90 minute time period. The sleep timer can be cancelled by pressing the Power button on the boombox. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G700CP boombox can’t be programmed like an alarm clock to power on and begin playback of music source at a specified time. A Function button allows the user to switch back and forth between the FM/AM Tuner, CD Player, Audio In Component and Cassette Player. The CD key allows direct access to the CD Player. The Repeat key activates CD repeat play mode. The Enter and Clear buttons are used to program and delete CD tracks into or out of memory. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G700CP Portable Stereo’s remote commander does control the radio’s entire manual and preset tuning features. The remote has Tune - and Tune + buttons for manual station tuning. Press and hold either one of these Tune buttons and the tuner will automatically find the next available station in descending or ascending station frequency order on the FM or AM bands. The tuner will automatically scan for the next available strongest signal broadcast and will stop when it receives one. Press the Tune -/+ buttons on the remote one key press at a time to locate a particular FM or AM frequency. For the FM Band, the tuner proceeds up or down the frequency spectrum .1 MHz channel steps at a time. On the AM Band, channel step tuning proceeds up or down the frequency spectrum at 10 kHz spacing increments. There are Preset - and Preset + buttons for selecting preset stations stored in memory. You must navigate preset stations in descending or ascending order one station at a time. There are Band and Mode buttons for selecting the tuner directly, switching back and forth between the FM and AM bands as well as changing stereo reception to mono reception if an FM station is received with static. The remote can raise or lower the volume to the desired listening level with the Vol +/- buttons. The remote can activate or shut off the stereos Power Drive Woofer by pressing the Woofer button. The Audio In key allows the audio component connected to the 3.5mm Line Input Jack to be selected for playback. There is a Sound button to cycle through all 5 Preset Sound Modes. The remote commander contains all CD playback transport functions which include Play, Stop, Pause, Forward Search, Reverse Search and two Track Skip buttons. There are Folder - and Folder + buttons to search MP3 CD folders. The remote commander cant control the cassette transport functions. The remote commander does not offer a numeric keypad. The remote control does not feature direct input preset station or CD track access. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G700CP boombox features the universal Sony “R” remote commander trademark symbol. This portable stereo can be operated by other Sony boombox remote controls displaying the “R” symbol with reduced functionality. This portable stereo is compatible with the learning feature of any Sony universal remote commander bearing the “R” and “L” trademark symbols. A 3.5mm (1/8”) Stereo Headphone Jack can be used with 16-68 impedance rated stereo headphones and 5 Preset Sound Modes (ROCK, DANCE, SALSA, REGGAETON and FLAT EQ setting to enhance the reproduction of classical music) to suit musical tastes are thrown in as well. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G700CP Portable Stereo operates on 8 D alkaline batteries (not included with purchase) and 2 AA alkaline batteries (not included with purchase) for the remote control. I recommend Duracell Coppertop DURALOCK Power Preserve D, Rayovac Ready Power D or Energizer Max Power Seal Technology D alkaline batteries for maximum audio performance and battery life of this wonderful Sony XPLOD CFD-G700CP Portable Stereo. I recommend Duracell Coppertop DURALOCK Power Preserve, Duracell Ultra Advanced, Duracell Ultra Power DURALOCK Power Preserve, Rayovac Ready Power or Energizer Max Power Seal Technology AA alkaline batteries, Energizer Advanced Lithium or Energizer Ultimate Lithium AA batteries for the remote commander. The remote commander accepts 1.2V NiMH (2300-2750 mAh capacity recommended) rechargeable AA batteries. The battery compartment on the main unit consists of two rows of 4 DC positive and negative battery contact terminals for proper placement of 8 flashlight D batteries inside. All D batteries should be replaced when the main unit’s LED OPR/BATT indicator dims, the boombox emits weak sound on a consistent basis or there is no sound. The AA batteries in the remote commander should be replaced when it can no longer operate the main unit from a short distance away or the portable stereo fails to respond to remote commands. AC power is available for this Sony XPLOD CFD-G700CP Portable Stereo. A detachable polarized plug AC power cord is supplied with the stereo. The D batteries are automatically disengaged as a direct current power source when it is plugged into a wall outlet. The AC power cord can be connected to a wall outlet directly, power strip or a power surge protector. All D/AA batteries should be removed from this boombox and the remote commander if the stereo will not be used for an extended period of time (30 days or more) to avoid damage from battery acid leakage. There is no definitive answer as to the actual time that the D batteries in the boombox or AA batteries inside the remote commander will last. The battery life specifications provided by Sony in the user manual are approximate, are offered under factory operating conditions and are accurate if you use Sony (LR20 or R20) D alkaline or zinc-chloride batteries that are manufactured in Japan. Your Sony XPLOD CFD-G700CP boombox will have different battery life because it is not likely to be used exclusively at the Sony factory. The longer the duration the Sony XPLOD CFD-G700CP boombox is powered on and as the volume increases during playback, battery life will be shortened accordingly. Proceed with caution. Stay away from cheap no name label alkaline or carbon-zinc batteries. Unknown brand D batteries are inferior, last a short time span and leak in the battery compartment. Make sure to never mix old and new batteries, different battery types, different battery voltages and different battery brands. The lithium AA battery features leak-resistant construction and may be more suitable for storage inside the remote commander compared to industry standard alkaline AA batteries. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G700CP Portable Stereo is compatible with the following 1.5V D battery types: carbon-zinc, alkaline and NiMH rechargeable batteries (1.2V 10,000 mAh capacity recommended). When purchasing D and AA alkaline batteries for this Sony XPLOD CFD-G700CP boombox, it is a good idea to check the date on the package. A fresh set of alkaline batteries should have a best if used by date of at least 6 or 7 years ahead of the date of purchase. Energizer Max Power Seal Technology, Rayovac Ready Power and Duracell Coppertop DURALOCK Power Preserve D/AA alkaline batteries are guaranteed by the manufacturer to stay fresh in the packaging for up to 10 years from the date of purchase. The package date for Energizer Ultimate Lithium AA batteries for the remote commander may be up to 20 years ahead of the date of purchase. Battery life is determined by several factors and that is why individual results vary. Such factors include the style of music being played, the volume level being used, active P.D.W. settings, the amount of time cassette recording takes place off the D batteries and ambient room or outdoor temperature. Battery life will be decreased if this boombox is powered by D alkaline batteries in extremely cold temperatures. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G700CP boombox can’t be powered by a car battery directly. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G700CP boombox does not offer the requisite 12V DC Power Input Jack for this purpose. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G700CP boombox can be powered from a car battery with a DC-to-AC power inverter. A power inverter converts DC battery power into AC current to supply power to portable audio electronics within a vehicle. A high quality power inverter incorporates surge protection, allows for safe engine startup, overload protection, low battery shutdown and is well-suited with a vehicle that has a 12V battery. Sony does not provide technical specifications with respect to third party power inverters for this Sony XPLOD CFD-G700CP Portable Stereo. Only the supplied detachable AC power cord can be plugged into the AC Input Jack. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G700CP boombox does come with a double-insulated power cord. The Sony boombox is furnished with a detachable AC power cord that features a C8 figure-8 shaped inlet connector. The C8 power cord connector connects to the AC Input Jack that is located on the Sony XPLOD CFD-G700CP boombox. The C8 power connector coupler is commonly used by consumer electronics manufacturers to power portable audio equipment such as a FM/AM radio or cassette player from 120V, 60Hz AC power. The IEC C8 AC power cord is a double-insulated power supply for all electrical safety protection needs. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G700CP boombox’s AC power supply can’t be used outside the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico out-of-the-box. Electrical conversion equipment is required for international travel. Use of this boombox outside of the intended domestic market may work but can’t be supported by the manufacturer. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G700CP boombox can work outside of the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico with a Step Up/Down Voltage Converter/Transformer. The voltage transformer converts voltages from 110-120 Volts to 220-240 Volts so that electronic devices intended for the U.S. market can be powered abroad. Some noise or electrical hum may be heard from the Sony XPLOD CFD-G700CP boombox when electrical conversion equipment is used to power it. AM Band reception may be impaired in the intended overseas geographical destination because there is no way to change the boombox’s AM Band channel step tuning from 10 kHz to 9 kHz. The FM Band channel step tuning can’t be changed from 100 kHz to 50 kHz to accommodate reception overseas in select European terrestrial radio markets. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G700CP boombox provides outstanding FM/AM Tuner reception indoors or outdoors even under challenging operating environments. The Digital FM Band Tuner receives the following station frequencies in the New York City Metropolitan Area in manual or preset tuning modes: 88.3, 88.9, 89.9, 91.5, 92.3, 95.5, 97.1, 100.3, 101.1, 101.9, 102.7, 103.5, 104.3, 105.1, 105.9, 106.7, 107.5 MHz. The Digital AM Band Tuner receives the following station frequencies in the New York City Metropolitan Area in manual or preset tuning modes: 570, 620, 660, 710, 770, 820, 880, 930, 970, 1010, 1050, 1130, 1190, 1280, 1330, 1380, 1430, 1480, 1560, 1600, 1660 KHz. Receivable FM/AM stations will vary by your geographic location, destination or radio market. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G700CP boombox features an outstanding digital tuner. The digital tuner provides the most accurate reception possible. The digital tuner locks on to station frequencies with precision while simultaneously reducing unwanted noise anomalies that often plague lesser performing portable stereos. A stereo broadcast can be changed to mono reception if the FM music program is received with static by pressing the Mode button on the remote commander or the main unit. This XPLOD CFD-G700CP boombox includes a telescopic FM Band swivel whip antenna and ferrite bar AM Band antenna for boosted reception. Moving a Sony XPLOD CFD-G700CP boombox closer to a window dramatically improves FM/AM reception. Medium Wave coverage can be expanded upon indoors with an external Omni-directional passive antenna. The Terk AM Advantage Indoor Antenna uses a wireless electromagnetic procedure known as inductive coupling to improve AM Band reception by placing the antenna in close proximity to the Sony XPLOD CFD-G700CP boombox. An external FM antenna, such as the C. Crane FM Reflect Dipole Antenna, can be attached via alligator clips to the whip antenna for improved FM reception indoors. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G700CP boombox does not feature auto-reverse playback or continuous play for Side A or Side B of a cassette. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G700CP boombox does not offer an auto stop in rewind or fast forward tape transport modes. The operating instructions indicate under the section “Playing a Tape”, “When the tape is wound to the end, press stop/eject to release rewind or fast forward.” The Sony XPLOD CFD-G700CP boombox does perform auto stop if the cassette has reached the end of Side A or Side B in play mode only to avoid wear and tear on the cassette mechanism. The cassette deck does not feature a tape counter to enable precise tape position location. Type II and Type IV cassette playback can’t be guaranteed. The cassette recorder can playback prerecorded cassettes one side at a time. You must turn over the cassette to hear the next side. The cassette deck can record music from its FM/AM Tuner, CD Player and an audio player that is connected to the 3.5mm Auxiliary Line Input Jack. For best cassette recording results, use ruggedly built Sony HF Series 60 or 90-minute Type I normal bias cassettes. AC power should be used during prolonged recording for best recording results and to conserve D battery power. Do not use tapes longer than 120-minutes unless it is for extended playback or recording. The cassette deck’s combination playback/record head, erase head, capstan and pinch rollers should be cleaned after approximately every 10 hours of use with a wet or dry head cleaning tape. A Maxell 191018 Wet Audio Tape Head Cleaner can be acquired for this maintenance task. The tape heads should be demagnetized periodically with a tape head demagnetizer. The tape head demagnetizer preserves optimum cassette operations and may be needed after approximately every 30 hours of cassette playback. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G700CP boombox is an excellent choice for cassette playback and recording needs. When an audio CD is inserted into the CD player, the total number of tracks and total play time of the disc are displayed on the LCD. For example, the LCD will show the following: “19 78:28”. This particular disc has 19 tracks with a play time of 78 minutes and 28 seconds. When playback of the CD begins, the LCD will show the track number being played and the elapsed play time of the current track. The LCD does not show the remaining play time of the track or entire disc. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G700CP Portable Stereo offers MP3 CD Playback from the customer’s personal music collection. This boombox can playback, shuffle, repeat and provide program play modes of MP3 files and folders from a homemade CD-R/RW disc that is burned on a computer. The CD Player can read and playback a maximum number of 255 MP3 files, 150 MP3 folders including the root folder, 8 directory levels or 256 MP3 files and folders on a CD-R/RW disc from the customer’s personal music library. The operating instructions specify that this boombox can play MP3 files on a CD-R/RW disc that conform to ISO9660 Level 1/Level2 or Joliet extension format discs recording standard. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G700CP boombox can’t play MP3 encoded discs that are finalized inaccurately due to faulty compact disc burning or recording software. The CD Player will not play an MP3 folder if there is no MP3 file in it. This Sony XPLOD CFD-G700CP Portable Stereo is compatible with the following MP3 CD bit rates, variable bit rates, constant bit rates and sampling frequencies: (MPEG 1 Layer 3| 32-320 kbps |32/44.1/48 kHz, MPEG 2 Layer 3 |8-160 kbps |16/22.05/24 kHz, MPEG 2.5 Layer 3 |8-160 kbps |8/11.025/12 kHz). The recommended MP3 file compression constant bit rates for high quality audio playback are 44.1 KHz and 128 kbps. Sony does not supply CD burning software to create CD-R/RW or MP3 CD audio discs with this boombox. The boombox is heavy and therefore not easily portable because of it. The LCD is small and should be backlit. I do wish it had even more amplifier power and an HD radio tuner. The Power Drive Woofer lighting is disabled when the sleep timer is activated. The Power Drive Woofer becomes inactive when headphones are connected to this stereo. The Power Drive Woofer can be turned off but the overall sound will be diminished when it is disengaged. This Sony boombox features a sturdy fold-down recessed black carry handle for reliable transport. The sturdy carry handle can be neatly pushed down and tucked away into the main unit when it is no longer needed. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G700CP boombox does not offer dual disc playback, DVD media playback, Blu-ray disc playback, playback of irregularly shaped discs, playback of audio discs encoded with various copyright protection schemes, playback of data compact discs, playback of video compact discs, Dolby B cassette noise reduction, electronic shock protection for the CD Player, compact disc recorder, external FM/AM antenna connectors, 3.5mm Microphone Jack, condenser microphone or karaoke entertainment. You can play tunes from your iPod, iPod mini, iPod classic, iPod nano, iPod shuffle, iPod touch, iPad, iMac, MacBook, iPhone, Zune MP3 Player, Sony Walkman MP3 Player, SanDisk Sansa Clip Zip MP3 Player, Samsung-Galaxy MP3 Player, Coby MP3 Player, Philips-Android MP3 Player, MP4 Video Player, Smartphone, Sony Blu-ray Disc Player, VAIO Laptop, Alienware gaming desktop, tablet computer, e-book reader, FM HD radio, internet radio, compact disc changer, the latest console game or another MP3 Player via a 3.5mm (1/8”) Auxiliary Line Input Jack. Do not purchase a cable to connect your iPod to the Sony XPLOD CFD-G700CP boombox. The 3.5mm (1/8”) stereo patch cable needed to make this connection between the stereo and iPod is built-in to the Sony XPLOD CFD-G700CP boombox. However, a Y-audio stereo patch cable is needed to connect a TV, DVD Player, CD Player or VCR to this portable stereo. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G700CP boombox can be connected to a portable satellite radio tuner but the manufacturer does not classify it as SiriusXM “satellite radio ready” or SiriusXM “satellite radio compatible.” The manufacturer does not support satellite radio reception on the Sony XPLOD CFD-G700CP boombox. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G700CP Portable Stereo does not feature a dedicated Phono Input Jack for connection to a turntable without a phono preamp, extra speaker jacks to connect additional speakers, iPod/iPhone Dock to charge and offer menu control of an attached iPod/ iPhone or a USB 2.0 Host Port to play MP3 music files from USB flash media devices. The Sony XPLOD CFD-G700CP boombox does not feature a dedicated 3.5mm, RCA Stereo or S/PDIF Digital Line Output Jack for connection to a stereo power amplifier, A/V receiver, integrated amplifier, MP3 recorder, powered speakers, cassette recorder, CD recorder, DAT recorder, DCC recorder or MD recorder with a 3.5mm, RCA Stereo or S/PDIF Fiber Optic Line Input Jack. It is not possible to play two different audio sources connected to the 3.5mm Line Input Jacks concurrently. There is no information contained in the operating instructions that supports habitual outdoor use of the Sony XPLOD CFD-G700CP boombox for mobile audio adventures.
